You know old furniture can be turned into something more beautiful. When you DIY them, they’ll look more beautiful than ever.
Just like turning Cinderella’s old rag into a beautiful gown, you can transform a piece of old furniture into modern or new furniture. On Craigslist, an old dresser was found, and we had to do a DIY project on it. Everyone loves to save money and make an original piece for their home.
The fun part about buying an old nursery dresser is that you can upcycle it or DIY it to your liking without buying something new and expensive. You can buy paint to repaint and change some of the handles if it’s not to your liking. It’ll turn out to be an original piece.
If you are a mom who is pregnant, the smell of spray paint might be too strong for you. You can consider using some DIY chalk for this project. With the chalk paint, you can go back and forth and distress it a bit.
If you have too many choices of paint, just remember you can always paint it back over. Painting it once does not mean it’s the end of the world.
When the dresser was bought, it had lots of scuff marks, and the paint was scratching off all over the place. If you are using your old dresser or bought an old one, you will know what I’m talking about. You can either sand the entire piece or use a sanding block to sand some areas where the paint was chipping.
Everyone is always using the top of the dresser, so you want to lightly coat the top with a white primer and then lightly sand it before doing the second coat of primer.
For the primer, you want to take your time painting it, making sure the brush strokes are nice and even. You don’t want any bumps because you want the surface to be smooth when you paint the color on it.
If you accidentally have bumps on the dresser, you can wait for the primer to dry and sand it to make it smooth.
The chalk paint covered the dresser with two coats of paint. If your’s need more, you can add another coat.
The top dresser should be the most important part you paint since more action is happening on the top. For the drawers, you can do one coat, but to be on the safe side, two coats should be painted. I used the pink paint from making the stencil wall and mixed it with tile grout, and painted the drawers.
When you are done with everything, you want to let it dry so you can top coat it. Once dry, you can brush on polyacrylic as a top coat. When the first coat dry, you can put on a second coat to have more protection.
If the hardware of the dresser is something you don’t like, you can replace them or spray paint them. If you want to spray paint the handles of the dresser, you want to take them off the drawers to spray paint because you don’t want the paint to go everywhere now.
When you spray paint the handles, you can reattach them when they are dry.
Once everything is dry, and the smell dissipates, you can move it into the room. Your family members or guests will love the new dresser that you finish.
