When you found out you were having a girl, how did you decide what “theme” you wanted to go with for her nursery?
I was for sure that this child will be a boy and I had the ideas and everything for him. It was going to be a superhero-themed nursery for him. However, when I heard about the news that it was a girl, I had to figure out to change the theme.
I started looking for gray and coral fabrics. I came across Michael Millers’ Out to Sea fabric by Sarah Jane and it was perfect. The whimsical designs of girly pirates and pretty mermaids is what I love about the fabric.
With the beautiful colors of soft silver grey, pink, corals, and yellow, it went so well with the coral line. There were eight patterns that I was in love with and use those to take the nursery to the next level.
How did you make it all come together? Inspiration boards, all in your head?
Of course, Pinterest was where most of the gathering was at. Here is my Pinterest board.
Etsy was also used for ideas and I bookmarked several ideas in my projects folder on the computer.
Sarah Jane Studio’s blog is so inspirational since she has a great DIY section that has some very inspiring ideas and amazing tutorials that you can utilize to make the room even more special.
What were your main colors?
The main colors were grey and coral with yellow and aqua as the accent colors. Grey for the paint color on the walls – Voyage by Valspar. As for coral, it was for the dresser painted in Flower Girl by Valspar.
Where did you find most of the items in the room?
I am proud to say that 95% of the items in her room were handmade, upcycled, or reused.
We used the crib that I slept in as a baby with some safety upgrades. An old rocking chair that my father-in-law refurbished for us and a beautiful changing table that my very talented brother-in-law, Chad, made.
As for the bedding, changing table covers, basket liners, and curtains, I made them all myself. My husband refinished the little pink dresser which is very special and unique to us because it belonged to his mom as a child.
Both Craig and his brother used it as children as well. The insides of the drawers were not refinished so there were still scribbles on them since a long time ago. But it is cool to have something to remember.

There were two prints that I love from Sarah Jane studios and my dad got them for me for Christmas.
I am still planning on getting this print in an 8×10 to go behind the rocker, but little Evie came two weeks early and I haven’t yet had time to order it.
Were you on a budget?
This entire project was on a budget. As I was a full-time student, my husband was the only one who made the income in the family, so we had to learn to stretch a dollar. No exception! The total cost came out to be around $350.
Any tips for moms who want to make their dream nursery come to reality?
Don’t be afraid to try new things. Before I started the nursery, I was intimidated by the sewing machine.
The sewing machine was given to me by my mother-in-law because she wanted me to use it. She thought I would be more proud of myself if I learned how to do it on my own
At first, I was worried, but after a few tries and some projects, I got more comfortable and started enjoying sewing more.
What do you love most about her room?
I don’t know if I can narrow it down since I love everything about it, but my top three favorites are probably:
- the curtains
- the prints by Sarah Jane
- the silhouette canvases that I painted
