Nestled along the eastern coastline of Sicily, Taormina is a beautiful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

As one of our favorite destinations, this charming hilltop town offers a glimpse into Italy’s past tucked between the breathtaking azure Mediterranean Sea. From ancient ruins to medieval streets, Taormina is a real treasure trove for history buffs and culture seekers. Discover the top historical gems that make Taormina a must-visit destination in Sicily, Italy.

1. Isola Bella

No visit to Taormina is complete without a stop at Isola Bella, a stunning peninsula and nature reserve. The isle translates to ‘beautiful island,’ and it’s easy to see why as it lies surrounded by lush greenery and crystal-clear waters. It’s an idyllic place to spend an afternoon relaxing!

From the beach, walk across shallow water to reach the peninsula (at low tide). Once you’re there, explore the protected area, home to rare plants and trees, and visit the museum on the hill. Besides its stunning natural beauty, you’ll find a fascinating history here, too!

2. Teatro Antico di Taormina

This beautiful Greek-Roman amphitheater built in 3 BC is still used today for concerts, plays, and film festivals. Visit first thing in the morning to wander around the ancient remains of this stunning stage. Perched high on the hillside, you get to witness the sweeping views of the Ionian Sea, Mount Etna, and the surrounding landscape.

Although it’s one of the top things to do in Taormina, it’s not a large area, so you won’t need more than an hour here. However, it’s definitely worth a visit to appreciate the historical atmosphere and incredible views.

3. Corso Umberto

Corso Umberto I is Taormina’s lively main street, a pedestrian-friendly avenue that’s full of medieval charm. The bustling street runs straight through the heart of town, connecting the old gates of Porto Messina to Porto Catania. Spanning half a mile, the street is home to beautiful old churches, palazzos, clothing boutiques, ceramic studios, and colorful gelaterias.

The area can get busy, especially during the summer months. However, you can always escape the crowds by turning into the narrow side alleys that lead to stunning, quiet squares.

4. Piazza IX Aprile

Arguably, one of the most picturesque spots in Taormina is Piazza IX Aprile. This lively square makes up the heart of Taormina, referred to as the city’s ‘living room’ by locals, and is where everyone gathers. Known for its panoramic views and lively atmosphere, it’s a must-see on your trip.

Wander through the square, bordered by a beautiful 17th-century church and the medieval clock tower, as well as many outdoor terraces, and soak up the atmosphere. The cafés here are perfect for a leisurely coffee or gelato while taking in the views and people-watching.

5. Duomo di Taormina

Taormina’s cathedral, or Duomo di Taormina, is the town’s main cathedral and another historical highlight. Built in the 13th century on the site of an earlier church in the beautiful Piazza del Duomo, the cathedral boasts a unique blend of Gothic and Norman architecture.

The exterior’s fortress-like appearance makes it look more like a military building than a church. However, this makes sense, as it was once part of the town’s defense! The look is softened by the stunning Baroque fountain out front. Inside, you’ll find a variety of artworks, including beautiful altars and paintings.

Conclusion

Taormina’s allure is undeniable, with an incredible blend of ancient ruins, medieval streets, and stunning natural landscapes. When you’re walking through the midst of the town, it’s as if you’ve just stepped back in time! From sipping coffee in a historic square to hiking up to medieval castles, Taormina gives a glimpse into Sicily’s rich and diverse history.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Sicily, Italy, don’t miss the timeless beauty of Taormina, where history comes alive amidst the stunning coastal scenery!
