Donald Trump is set to join forces with former top Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson instead of participating in the upcoming GOP presidential debate, intensifying his feud with the conservative cable channel.
Debate-Night Counterprogramming
According to sources briefed on the matter, Trump plans to conduct an online interview with Carlson on the same night as the debate, in what The New York Times describes as a form of “debate-night counterprogramming.”
Refused to Sign the RNC
Trump’s decision not to attend the debate has been long anticipated, and he has refused to sign the RNC-required pledge to support the chosen nominee of Republican primary voters.
Needed to Participate in the Debate
This pledge is a prerequisite for candidates to participate in the debate, a rule implemented by RNC Chair Rona McDaniel, who is aligned with Trump.
Carlson Has Beef With FOX
Fox News has become embroiled not just with Trump but also with Carlson, who remains under contract and continues to receive compensation from Fox despite having his show removed from the air.
A Cease-and-Desist Letter
Carlson received a cease-and-desist letter from Fox after airing videos on a platform known as X (formerly Twitter).
Accused of Promoting White Supremacy
Carlson has been criticized for promoting white nationalist and supremacist ideologies, including the “great-replacement theory.”
He Cited White Supremacist Platforms
A recent in-depth investigation by The New York Times revealed that his program, “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” at times cited white supremacist platforms like the neo-Nazi Stormfront.
Trump Hinted He Wouldn’t Debate
Trump hinted at his debate absence on Thursday, asserting that his high intelligence and poll numbers make it unnecessary for him to participate.
Claims His Poll Numbers Are Great
He wrote, “Many people are asking whether or not I will be doing the DEBATES? ALL AMERICANS have been clamoring for a President of extremely High Intelligence. As everyone is aware, my Poll numbers, over a ‘wonderful’ field of Republican candidates, are extraordinary.”
‘Why Would I Debate? I AM YOUR MAN’
He continued, “In fact, I am leading the runner up, whoever that may now be, by more than 50 Points. Reagan didn’t do it, and neither did others. People know my Record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I Debate? I’M YOUR MAN. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
He Criticized FOX News
He also criticized Fox News for not showcasing polls where he leads against Biden, and he accused the network of using unfavorable images of him.
Claims They Won’t Show Winning Polls
Trump complained, “Why doesn’t Fox and Friends show all of the Polls where I am beating Biden, by a lot. They just won’t do it!”
“Just Like 2016 All Over Again’
He continues, “They think they are getting away with something, they’re not. Just like 2016 all over again…And then they want me to debate!”
He’s The Only One Capable
Trump reiterated that he is the only candidate capable of decisively beating Joe Biden, whom he referred to as the “WORST ‘P’ EVER.”
Carlson’s Previous Opinions About Trump
During the discovery process in the lawsuit between Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems, it was revealed that Carlson had privately referred to Trump as “demonic,” a “destroyer,” and expressed strong disdain towards him.
