Why Does Trump Want to Buy a Gun? Because It Has His Name on It! Questions of Legality Arise Amid Ongoing Legal Challenges

Former President Donald J. Trump recently made headlines when a video surfaced of him at a gun shop in South Carolina, where he expressed interest in purchasing a Glock pistol.

Is This Even Legal?

The visit has sparked questions about the legality of such a purchase, given Trump’s ongoing legal challenges and criminal indictments.

In a video posted on X, Trump was seen at the Palmetto State Armory outlet in Summerville, S.C. He examined a special Trump edition Glock pistol adorned with his face and the inscription “Trump 45th.”

During the video, he remarked, “I want to buy one.” – not once, but twice.

Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, shared the video, exclaiming, “President Trump buys a @GLOCKInc in South Carolina!”

The video featured Trump in the company of a small crowd, including a man holding a firearm.  A voice in the background commented, “That’s a big seller.”

The video’s release immediately caused an outcry on social media as users had many questions regarding the legality of Trump’s potential purchase.

This scrutiny was fueled by Trump’s four criminal indictments relating to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and his possession of classified documents after leaving office.

Concerns were also raised about whether the store could legally sell a firearm to an individual under indictment with one Twitter user @MikeLorent27008 commenting “Lock the crook up.. that’s possession!”.

Big Gun or Tiny Hands?

Others mocked the former president with one user @JenniLynn079 stating “His tiny hands make the gun look ginormous”.

However, within two hours of the initial social media post, Cheung deleted it and issued a statement clarifying, “President Trump did not purchase or take possession of the firearm. He simply indicated that he wanted one.”

Attempts to gather more information from the shop’s owner or staff were met, at first, with silence and declined comments.

Trump’s (Many) Other Problems

Trump’s online presence on his social media site, Truth Social, has come under increasing scrutiny for its language concerning his ongoing legal battles, with concerns about potential threats of violence directed at various agencies, including the FBI.

All this, along with Trump’s other legal woes, has left the former President Trump in a precarious position.

Under federal gun laws, merchants are prohibited from selling firearms to individuals under indictment for crimes that carry sentences exceeding one year.

Additionally, indicted defendants are barred from shipping or receiving weapons across state lines.

However, the statute does not explicitly prevent individuals under indictment from merely purchasing or possessing firearms.

Trump did not attempt to buy the handgun in the South Carolina store, which, given his many pending criminal charges, was probably to the liking of his lawyers.

This fact did not stop people online from raising objections to the former President’s interest in purchasing a firearm when tens of thousands of Americans die in gun-related deaths each year.
