Wayne Brady, the well-known entertainer, candidly opens up about his pansexuality, addressing his struggles with love addiction, societal pressures, and the importance of embracing his true self.
“I Am Pansexual”
At the age of 51, he’s ready to reveal a deeply personal truth to the world: “I am pansexual,” a declaration that encapsulates his attraction to individuals regardless of their gender or sex.
‘Bisexual — With An Open Mind’
With a warm chuckle, Brady humorously phrases it as “Bisexual — with an open mind!”
His home, abuzz with activity, houses not only Brady himself but also his daughter Maile, 20, and his ex-wife Mandie Taketa, 47.
He Came Out to His Ex-Wife First
It was Taketa, the first person Brady came out to, who responded with unwavering support: “I just said, ‘Great.’ As I knew coming out would help him be happier,” she affirms.
She Was Accepting and Smiling
Maile’s response was equally accepting, encapsulated in an affirming shrug and an ear-to-ear smile.
His Family’s Hulu Series Premiers Next Year
In the midst of this familial harmony, a camera crew weaves through the home, capturing moments for a forthcoming reality series centered around their blended family dynamic, set to premiere on Hulu next year.
Ready to Share His Story
Joining them are Taketa’s partner, Jason Fordham, and their newborn, born in 2021, in an expression of the family’s expanding bonds.
Amid this whirlwind of life, Brady finds a moment of reprieve in a quiet corner, ready to share his story in his own words.
He Needed Time to Think
“As I started doing research, both about myself and in the broader context, I couldn’t exactly say I was bisexual, as I needed to grasp its nuances. I hadn’t really had a chance to act on my feelings,” explains Brady.
He’s Attracted to Everyone
“So, I settled on pansexual, a term that, although not used traditionally, signifies my attraction to individuals identifying as gay, straight, bi, transsexual, or non-binary.
This attraction is broad and extends to the person behind the identity.” Brady unveils his narrative with an authenticity that resonates deeply.
People Don’t Know the Real Him
Brady, renowned for his effervescent presence on shows like “Let’s Make a Deal,” admits the complexity of his public persona. “People think they really know me. That has its advantages and disadvantages,” he muses.
This dualism is reflected in his chosen residence, secluded within the tranquility of Malibu’s embrace, far removed from the spotlight’s glare.
He Talks About His Challenges
An introvert at heart, he opens up about his early life challenges — a debilitating stutter borne from anxiety and bullying. Acting became his refuge, enabling him to communicate through characters, like Tigger and Goofy.
His Quest for Validation
As Brady shares his revelations, he peels back layers of his journey, exposing his struggles with love addiction, and a quest for validation in others that ultimately led to unfulfilled relationships.
Addressing His Deep-Rooted Trauma
Through therapy and self-reflection, he recognized the deep-rooted trauma behind this behavior. His candidness underscores the intricacies of healing and self-acceptance.
He Began to Question His Sexuality
Brady’s introspection eventually led him to question his sexual identity, traversing paths of doubt and uncertainty.
He confessed to moments of attraction towards certain men in his life but suppressed them due to societal expectations and ingrained prejudices.
Lots of Things Were Holding Him Back
“What’s the fastest way to hurt another man? I’m gonna call you out of your name. I’m gonna call you gay. I’m gonna emasculate you,” he reflects on the societal pressures that held him back.
Feeling Like an Imposter
As Brady grappled with his truth, he found solace within his LGBTQ+ community of friends and colleagues. Yet, he felt like an impostor, yearning for the day when he could stand authentically beside them.
He Began to Challenge the Norm
His path to self-acceptance involved challenging societal norms and dismantling the shame that had perpetuated his secrecy.
‘I’m Still Coming Together’
“I had to break that behavior. I don’t know about most, actually. I’m still coming together,” admits Brady.
Pursuing His Journey
With unwavering determination, he pursues a journey of healing, envisioning a future where his single, open-minded, and pansexual identity coalesces with his vibrant public persona.
