Reports suggest that Roosevelt Avenue in the Corona neighborhood of Queens is now referred to as the “Market of Sweethearts.”
The Bronx Used to Have Highest Concentration
In the past, the Bronx harbored the largest concentration of sex workers in New York City.
New Prostitution Hub
But now, Roosevelt Avenue in the Corona neighborhood of Queens is the new illegal hub for prostitution.
Massive Influx of Asylum Seekers
This is due to the massive influx of immigrants into the city, which has received over 120,000 new asylum seekers since last spring.
They’re Soliciting Children
Some of these prostitutes operate during the day and have been observed soliciting children as they leave school.
Mayor Eric Adams Acknowledges the Situation
Mayor Eric Adams, who had previously warned about the transformative impact of the migrant crisis on New York City, acknowledges the rise in prostitution and its implications.
Concerns About the Migrant Sex Workers
While a significant portion of the sex workers in this area are female Venezuelan migrants, Mayor Adams did not clarify whether they had been involved in prostitution prior to their arrival in the city or if they turned to this profession due to circumstances.
Causes of the Eruption in Prostitution
Adams attributes this emergence of prostitution to the challenging economic conditions that have driven people to engage in illegal activities as a means of survival.
‘This Is What Happens’
“This is what happens when you create an atmosphere that people can’t provide for themselves and have to turn to illegal activities to do so,” he said.
Efforts to Tackle the Issue
The mayor’s administration is planning to focus on prosecuting the patrons while extending assistance to the women involved in sex work.
Disapproval of Legalizing Sex Work
Mayor Adams expressed disapproval of far-left activists advocating for the legalization of prostitution, suggesting that there are significant concerns regarding illegal sex work.
“…there are real issues around illegal sex work, from STDs to sex trafficking girls to violence,” he said.

In a previous statement in September, Mayor Adams voiced his concern that the ongoing migrant crisis would have a profound and lasting impact on New York City.

He talked about the overwhelming influx of migrants and the subsequent challenges faced by the city, including a significant budget deficit.

He cautioned that the crisis could potentially lead to the decline of New York City and have a detrimental effect on every community within the city.

“Let me tell you something New Yorkers: Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to.
