After agreeing on a vegan family diet, a husband and wife found their relationship strained when she discovered that he was giving their son non-vegan snacks. Did he break her trust, or was she being unreasonable?
Animal Abuse Enabler?
The discovery came as a shock to Cindy. After learning her husband, James had been buying non-vegan snacks for their son, she accused him of being an “animal abuse enabler.”
The Day It All Changed
Six years prior to our story, married couple Cindy and James were like any other omnivorous couple.
But everything changed when one of Cindy’s vegan friends sent her a copy of Dominion, a documentary about modern agricultural practices. The film had a profound impact on the woman.
A New Diet
From that day on Cindy found all non-vegan food “revolting” and refused to eat any meat, egg, and dairy.
Her newfound veganism became a topic of serious discussion for her and James, who eventually agreed to meet her halfway and adopt a vegetarian diet, with only vegan food allowed in the house.
And Baby Too
This new change included their son Mike, who was 6 years old at the time. After seeing a dietician who approved of the change, Cindy and James decided that their son would be vegan too.
Everyone was happy with the new arrangement, at least in the beginning.
The Discovery
Let’s fast-forward to the present day. Cindy and James were still vegan and vegetarian, and their now 12-year-old son was vegan too.
However, one day James noticed something unusual in his son’s school bag.
Contraband Candy
As it turned out, their son had been buying nonvegan candy and McDonald’s burgers with his chore money, and James had stumbled upon a cache of candy and burger wrappers in the bottom of his bag.
It Isn’t Fair
James sat down with his son to discuss what he’d found. According to Mike, he felt alienated and excluded from his friends because of his diet.
He was frequently jealous that they were able to eat better food and candy than he could. In his eyes, it wasn’t fair.
Dad Gets It
His father was sympathetic. James understood his feelings and didn’t want Mike to spend his pocket money on food, especially when he was throwing out the perfectly good vegan snacks they were giving him.
So, James and his son came to an agreement.
A New Agreement
Of course, James knew that his wife wouldn’t be happy with what her son was eating. So, on the way to Mike’s football practice, James began to stop at the corner store to buy secret non-vegan snacks and candy for his son.
Cindy Finds Out
Both were happy with the arrangement, at least for a while.
But things changed one day when Cindy came across Mike’s non-vegan snacks and realized what was going on.
“Your Corrupting Our Son”
According to James, his furious wife “completely flipped out” at the discovery. She turned on her husband, calling him “an animal abuse enabler” and a number of other names.
She even went so far as to accuse him of “corrupting” their son.
Little White Lie
Part of Cindy’s rage could be attributed to a conversation she had with their son. When Mike realized his mom knew what was going on, he panicked and told her that he didn’t know they were non-vegan.
While James didn’t blame his son for lying, he was now left with an angry wife who wouldn’t speak to him.
Is She a Bully?
The exasperated husband turned to Reddit for help and found that most commenters were on his side and took issue with his wife.
“She is trying to bully everyone with her choice,” one claimed. “Does she forget most of her life eating animals? Now she wants everyone to do what she wants.”
An Informed Perspective
One vegan commenter even dropped in to share their informed perspective.
“I’m old enough to have made that choice and I’m happy – your son shouldn’t have it ‘forced’ upon him at such a young age when building bonds is so important.
His body, his choice and you’re doing nothing wrong supporting him.”
No Longer Taking It
James took these comments to heart and admitted, “In retrospect, I shouldn’t have hidden any of this.” He said that he would “no longer allow” his wife’s domineering behavior.
“We are going to have a talk as a family after my wife gets home from work,” he finished.
