A frustrated bride-to-be stirred up Redditors recently when she revealed that her groom had canceled all the vegan options for their wedding. He did it behind her back, even though her family were vegans and paying for everything!
It’s an Exciting Time
The Original Poster (OP) is a 25-year-old woman in the midst of preparing for her wedding. Her groom-to-be is a 31-year-old man.
There Was One Glitch
The happy couple agreed on just about everything as they were planning the ceremonies. But OP and her fiancé just couldn’t see eye to eye on the food selection.
He’s Not Really Open to Veganism
OP and her family are vegans, while her fiancé and his family are all heavy meat eaters.
OP doesn’t mind if her man eats meat, but he apparently is not quite as accepting.
He Focused on His Preferences
Right off the bat, her fiancé came up with his preferred menu for the wedding, and all the choices were loaded with animal products.
She Didn’t Want Much
OP wanted to add 4 or 5 vegan options so that her family would be able to eat and, more importantly, feel welcome.
Not Real Food
But OP’s fiancé and his family didn’t want to add any vegan dishes at all.
They thought they would just be wasting money on dishes that weren’t “real food.”
He Had Her Covered
Her fiancé argued that they were already having salad and that should be plenty for OP and her family to eat during the wedding.
She Put Her Foot Down
They went back and forth about it for a while, but OP finally put her foot down and said that they had to have vegan dishes.
Vegan Dishes for the Guests
It was the only way her guests could truly be comfortable at the wedding.
They Had Good Reasons
OP didn’t care if her fiancé didn’t understand the vegan lifestyle.
Her family’s motivation for veganism was to avoid health issues that had plagued earlier loved ones, so she thought he should respect that.
He Went Behind Her Back
So that was that, and the couple went about planning for their big day.
Then one day, while working on wedding prep, OP found out her fiancé had called their caterer and removed all the vegan options from the menu. Without even talking to her about it.
She Caused a Scene
OP was livid and drove to her fiancé’s workplace.
She stormed into his office and completely flipped out about his deception and disregard for her feelings.
He Wanted Her to Leave
At first, OP’s fiancé said it had all been his mom’s idea.
Then he asked her to please go home and cool off because she was making a big scene at his place of employment.
It Was Her Fault
OP did go home, and when her fiancé arrived, they started fighting again.
He told her that it was her fault he had to go behind her back because she never listened to him and disregarded his input on everything.
It Was a Small Request
At that point, OP reminded her fiancé that most of the menu was just as he had ordered and that she only wanted to add a few vegan items.
She Was Paying
OP also reminded him that her family was paying for everything, so she couldn’t imagine how he could object on the basis of cost.
They Don’t Listen to Him
Later on, the fiancé’s mom called OP to support her son’s point of view.
The older woman said that OP and her family always disregarded the groom-to-be’s opinion.
She Should Have Been Grateful
Not only that, her fiancé’s mom said OP had been way out of line for causing a scene at her son’s work.
And she thought OP should be grateful for him trying to save some money.
Can She Trust Him?
OP is beyond frustrated with the whole incident. While she’s not thrilled that she caused a ruckus at her fiancé’s workplace, she feels betrayed by his actions and wonders how much she can trust him.
Reddit commenters almost unanimously support OP’s position in this situation.
They say that her fiancé and his mother are being super controlling, and many warn OP that this may be a preview of what her marriage would look like.
