After the former president stormed out of a courtroom last week during his New York civil fraud trial, his niece Mary Trump described him as a “toddler” during a live radio interview.
Dramatic Exit
Former President Donald Trump stirred headlines yet again, after abruptly exiting the courtroom during his own civil fraud trial in New York last week.
And it didn’t take long for his niece, Mary Trump, to publically poke fun at her uncle’s latest antics.
First Time Out in 77 Years
“It was as if for the first time in 77 years, the toddler had been given a time-out!” she told SiriusXM host Dean Obeidallah.
“And as you know, he didn’t react particularly well to it.”
Two Violated Gag Orders
The incident came about during his former attorney Michael Cohen’s testimony, and after Judge Arthur Engoron fined Trump $10,000 for violating his gag order for the second time.
Trump was banned from discussing court staff publically or with reporters.
Bold Announcements Outside the Courthouse
But it was Cohen’s testimony that Trump did not ask him to inflate numbers on financial statements that spurred the outburst.
After storming out of the court he told the press outside of the courthouse “The witness just admitted that we won the trial. And the judge should end this trial immediately. Thank you.”
An Insiders Perspective
His niece, who is known for her less-than-favorable perspective of her uncle’s political career, didn’t just joke about his behavior.
She also gave an insider’s perspective on his reaction.
No Control of the Room
“One reason he reacted so badly is because there have been very few, if any, circumstances in his entire life in which he didn’t have control of the room,” Mary continued.
“So to have to sit there and take it must have been extremely painful.”
Trump Showed Up
“I’m guessing he regretted having shown up. I don’t know that he’s there today either,” she continued.
“But what people need to understand is he doesn’t have to be. He showed up voluntarily.”
A Dawning Recognition
During the same interview with Obeidallah, she went even further, suggesting that Trump’s visceral reaction during Cohen’s testimony wasn’t just about Cohen’s denial, but may have also been a dawning recognition of Trump’s place in the trial.
No More Intimidation
“I believe he was there at the beginning to control the spin. And over the last few days, he was there simply to stare down Michael Cohen,” she said.
“Maybe he’s starting to [recognize] that he can’t intimidate people like Michael Cohen anymore.”
The E. Jean Carroll Trial
Mary also made reference to another trial, where Trump was ruled liable for sexual abuse and defamation.
“This is the only case he’s shown up for. He didn’t bother going to the E. Jean Carroll civil trial, I think, ever. So he’s putting himself in this position.”
The Biggest Critic in the Family
Of all the members of the Trump dynasty, Mary Trump has been the most vocal critic of her uncle over the years.
The author and psychologist has even penned a book titled Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, where she describes Donald Trump as a destructive, fraudulent “narcissist” for whom “nothing is ever enough.”
“Garden-Variety Narcissism”
“This is far beyond garden-variety narcissism,” she writes.
With her doctoral degree in clinical psychology, her opinions on her uncle’s psychology aren’t just from an ‘insider’ perspective, but from a professional one.
A Fragile Ego
“Donald is not simply weak,” she continued.
“His ego is a fragile thing that must be bolstered every moment because he knows deep down that he is nothing of what he claims to be.”
Not So Happy Family
Of course, the Trump family has been less than impressed with her public stance on her presidential relative.
They have even sued her in an attempt to block its publishing. The White House has also rejected the claims made in her book.
Trial Still Ongoing
Despite a number of attempts by Trump’s legal team to cut it short, the New York fraud trial against Trump and his business organization is still ongoing.
