Former U.S. President Donald Trump has made a bold pledge regarding his potential re-election in 2024, vowing to defund schools that teach critical race theory and what he referred to as “transgender insanity.” At a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, Trump made his stance on race and LGBTQ+ education in schools abundantly clear.
Trump’s Day One Executive Order Promise
“On day one, I will also sign a new executive order to cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, transgender insanity, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children,” he declared on stage.
Transgender Sports Participation Ban
The former president also expressed his commitment to barring transgender individuals from participating in women’s sports and advocating for legislation against what he termed “child sexual mutilation,” a reference to gender-affirming medical procedures.
Working the Crowd
Trump rhetorically questioned, “Can you believe we even have to say this in all 50 states?”
Agreement With Trump’s Statements
Supporters of Trump’s stance have voiced their approval.
One X (formerly twitter) user, in a surprising show of agreement, wrote, “I don’t like Trump’s actions he has done, and he should be in jail right now, but what he just said I 100% agree with.
He actually might win with just this statement here, but what he has done in the past, unfortunately, he will be in jail someday.”
Voting for “Something Great Again”
Another supporter echoed the sentiment, stating, “On Day One, I’m voting for the beginning of something great again. A moral perspective backed up by law and order.”
Opponents of Trump’s Proposal
In contrast, opponents of Trump’s stance have raised concerns about federal government intervention in local education decisions.
Code for Non-Existent Issues
One X user suggested that Trump’s proposal might be “code for ‘I won’t cut anything…because none of that stuff is taught in schools’.”
Criticism also extended to what some labeled as “MAGA hypocrisy,” emphasizing a discrepancy between Trump’s stance and his core message of limited government involvement.
History of Objecting to Race Education
Donald Trump’s opposition to race education in schools is not new.
He has previously referred to such education as “toxic propaganda,” particularly objecting to anti-bias training that addressed topics like white privilege.
He asserted, “They were teaching people to hate our country, and I’m not going to allow that to happen.”
Threats to LGBTQ+ Rights
In a January campaign video, Trump extended his stance on LGBTQ+ issues, threatening to ban gender-affirming care for transgender individuals of all ages.
This proposal would effectively make medical transition unattainable in the United States.
Halt on Federal Programs
“I will sign a new executive order instructing every federal agency to cease all programs that promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age,” Trump proclaimed.
He went further, stating that he would seek Congressional support to permanently halt the use of federal taxpayer funds for gender-affirming procedures.
Preparing for a Potential Trump Presidency
In response to the potential of a Trump presidency with these policies, LGBTQ+ activists have asserted their readiness to combat such initiatives.
ACLU’s Readiness to Fight
The executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Anthony D. Romero, made their stance clear, “If Donald Trump believes that a second term would allow him to continue with the unconstitutional and un-American policies of his first term, the ACLU will be ready to fight back at every turn.”
Trump’s Stance Sets the Tone
Trump’s stance on these issues sets the stage for an intense and polarizing political debate should he decide to run for the presidency once more.
