Former President Donald Trump has a message for his fellow Republicans as the 2024 campaign ramps up. According to Trump, the future of the party depends on how they talk about abortion. Here is the full story.
Trump Has a Message
Trump delivered speeches to two powerful pro-life groups in mid-September, and his message was the same to both of them.
Abortion Is Key
The former president thinks Republicans can win elections across the nation in 2024 by focusing on abortion.
The Party Is at Risk
But it’s a double-edged sword, says Trump. Get it wrong, and the future of the party could be in jeopardy.
Hard to Get It Right
Trump says abortion is a very delicate issue, and explaining the Republican point of view is very important. But it’s also not easy to get right.
Republicans Lack Finesse
And Trump says that many pro-life candidates at all levels don’t have the finesse to pull off the conversation in an effective manner.
There’s This Guy…
Not surprisingly, Trump does know one guy who can talk about abortion with the best of them.
Trump Says He’s the Man for the Job
In particular, Trump calls himself the most pro-life president in history and thinks that his track record speaks for itself.
He Has a Track Record
In speaking to the Family Research Council, Trump pointed out that he had been able to reinstate the Mexico City Policy.
No Federal Funds for Abortions
That move prohibits federal funds from being used to support any organizations that help women get access to abortions.
A Receptive Audience
It was the same message Trump delivered to the Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, which proved to be a receptive audience.
Never Compromise
Said Penny Nance, chief executive of the group, “Donald Trump didn’t just deliver, he exceeded expectations, and he taught us not to accept less than what we’ve been promised.”
They Think Trump Is Weak
But many in the Republican party think Trump doesn’t go far enough in his pro-life stance.
He Says They’re Too Harsh
The former President has yet to throw his support behind an abortion ban at the federal level.
And he cautions that many conservatives are “too harsh” in their views and risk alienating voters.
DeSantis Gets Strict
Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed off on a state-level law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy.
Many women do not even know that they are pregnant at six weeks, and since pregnancy is counted starting from the woman’s last period and not from fertilization, they may not have even had a developing fetus in the womb for much of that time.
He’s Still Behind Trump
DeSantis is generally polling well behind Trump in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
Criticizing the Boss
And Trump’s former second-in-command has been vocal about his old boss’s weak stance on abortion.
Pence Wants It All
Mike Pence, who served as Trump’s vice president from 2017 to 2021, wants nothing less than a federal-level law that bans abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.
Marginalizing Life
Pence sees Trump’s failure to embrace a federal law as an assault on pro-lifers.
He says the former commander-in-chief is “trying to marginalize the cause of life.”
Trump Is in the Middle
Even under the heat of that sort of conservative pressure, though, Trump is trying to straddle the line between the two extremes.
In both speeches, for example, he was clear about his support for abortions under certain circumstances – rape, incest, health dangers for the mother.
Both Sides Will Love Him
Trump says he thinks he can make both sides happy and even insists he can be a mediator between Republicans and Democrats on the abortion issue.
