Vax Wars in the NFL: Travis Kelce’s Response to ‘Mr. Pfizer’ Jab Raises Questions About Athletes and Politics

Aaron Rodgers took a jab at Travis Kelce after he appeared in a new commercial promoting the flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Rodgers referred to Kelce as “Mr. Pfizer” and elicited a response from him a short time later.

In between trying to lead the Kansas City Chiefs back to the Super Bowl and dating Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce has been a very busy man as of late.

But he still recently found time to shoot a new commercial.

Kelce promotes both the flu and COVID-19 vaccines in the commercial.

He’s shown getting the two vaccines in the spot, which was produced by Pfizer.

Kelce isn’t the only celebrity in the commercial, either. His mother Donna, who has enjoyed her fair share of TV airtime in recent weeks while attending Chiefs games with Swift, is also in it.

Aaron Rodgers caught the commercial and made a comment about it during an interview following the New York Jets game against the Chiefs in Week 4 of the NFL season.

Rodgers referred to Kelce as “Mr. Pfizer” while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show. “[It was a] moral victory out there that we hung with the champs and that our defense played well,” Rodgers said, “and [Patrick Mahomes] didn’t have a crazy game and Mr. Pfizer, we kind of shut him down. He didn’t have his crazy impact game.”

Not Rodgers’ First Rodeo

This isn’t the first time Rodgers has made headlines for making comments related to the COVID-19 vaccine.

He spent the majority of the 2022 NFL season answering questions about it after he admitted that he had chosen not to be vaccinated.

Rodgers was also forced to miss a game for the Green Bay Packers last season after getting caught misleading the public when it came to his vaccination status.

He told everyone he had been “immunized” even though he hadn’t received a COVID-19 vaccine.

Kelce’s Response

Kelce was asked about Rodgers referring to him as “Mr. Pfizer” this week.

He downplayed it. “I thought it was pretty good,” he said. “With this mustache right now, I look like a guy named Mr. Pfizer. Who knew I’d get into the vax wars with Aaron Rodgers, man?”

Mr. Pfizer vs. Mr. Johnson & Johnson?

But Kelce was quick to point out that Rodgers plays for a team owned by Johnson & Johnson heir Woody Johnson, who has no doubt profited from the company’s COVID-19 vaccine. “Mr. Pfizer vs. the Johnson & Johnson family over there,” Kelce said.

Kelce also talked about why he chose to get the COVID-19 vaccine in the first place. He said he felt good about his decision.

“I Stand By It 1,000%”

“I got it because of keeping myself safe, keeping my family safe, the people in this building, so yeah, I stand by it 1,000%,” he said.

Mr. Pfizer Is Just Fine With Him

Because of all this, Kelce reiterated that he didn’t have an issue with what Rodgers called him. “Fully comfortable with him calling me Mr. Pfizer,” he said.

Under different circumstances, Rodgers’ jab may have gotten under Kelce’s skin and caused some friction between the two. But it didn’t seem as though Kelce was all that upset about it.

A Break for Kelce

If nothing else, Rodgers’ comments gave Kelce an opportunity to talk about something other than Taylor Swift for a day.

It’s been just about the only thing reporters have asked him about over the last couple of weeks.

More Publicity for Pfizer

Pfizer is also probably thrilled about the controversy that Rodgers kicked up. It has gotten more eyes on their commercial with Kelce and helped them get more publicity than they may have received otherwise.
