A mother and her two daughters, Julie Pearce, Rosalie Pearce, and Kaylie Adams, have escaped jail time after being found guilty of operating an illegal puppy farm. Here’s the full story.

The Cardiff Crown Court heard disturbing details about the atrocious conditions in which the dogs were kept, prompting a raid by police, RSPCA officers, and council officials, ultimately saving over 50 dogs.

The Dog Business

The prosecution revealed that the family ran an extensive unlicensed dog breeding business, using online platforms like Gumtree to sell the animals.

The Dogs Were Suffering

The dogs were kept in deplorable conditions, confined to filthy rooms covered in feces and urine.

Many of the dogs were malnourished and underweight, suffering from neglect.

The family’s illegal operation came to light when authorities intervened, rescuing the animals from their appalling living conditions.

Buyers Expressed Their Remorse

In one instance, a Shih Tzu-cross puppy was falsely advertised as being raised in a loving family home, with the buyer paying £2,000 for the pet.

Unbeknownst to the buyer, the puppy came from a puppy farm, and she expressed regret over her purchase upon discovering the truth.

The Mastermind

Julie Pearce was identified as the mastermind behind the business, despite living in Gran Canaria and leaving her daughters to handle the day-to-day operations.

They Pleaded Guilty

All three defendants, residents of Fochriw near Caerphilly, South Wales, pleaded guilty to charges of running an unlicensed dog breeding business and engaging in unfair commercial practices.

They Claimed They Were Remorseful

Rosalie Pearce and Kaylie Adams also admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and failing to meet their welfare needs.

During the court proceedings, barristers representing the defendants claimed that they were genuinely remorseful for their actions.

However, Judge David Wynne Morgan condemned their greed and the appalling condition in which the dogs were kept.

The Sentence Was Given

The sentencing resulted in suspended prison terms for Rosalie Pearce and Kaylie Adams, with 56 weeks and 100 hours of unpaid work assigned to each.

Julie Pearce received a 42-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Banned From Having Animals

Additionally, all three defendants were banned from keeping animals for the next 10 years.

A Proceeds of Crime Act investigation will be initiated to examine their finances.

Following the sentencing, Philippa Leonard, Caerphilly Council’s cabinet member for public protection, emphasized the seriousness of unlicensed dog breeding and expressed hope that the case would serve as a deterrent to others engaging in similar activities.

She stressed the council’s commitment to taking action against those who flout the law, including pursuing proceedings under the Proceeds of Crime Act to recover costs associated with housing and caring for seized dogs.

Hope Rescue, a charity organization, provided care and support for rescued dogs.

Sara Rosser, operations manager at Hope Rescue, described the shocking conditions the dogs had endured, including matted fur soiled with feces and urine, flea infestations, and pregnancies.

Despite their challenging backgrounds, all the dogs have since been rehomed and are now thriving in loving families.

Gumtree, the online platform used by the defendants to sell the dogs, expressed its commitment to animal welfare and its cooperation with authorities during the investigation. They work alongside industry partners, including the Pets Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG), to ensure compliance with best practices and improve animal welfare standards in online animal sales.
