Her Money Was Stolen…by Her Parents
A Reddit user tells her story of how she was supposed to receive a college fund from a relative but quickly found out the money was taken by her parents to pay for her brother’s wedding.
A Great-Aunt’s Blessing
The Original Poster’s (OP) great-aunt set up savings accounts for all of her female relatives.
Her great-aunt saw the value to invest in women’s education, despite being told differently in her culture.
She Wanted To Set Up Her Family for Success
OP’s great-aunt lived with her father in London where she was educated. She attended college and became a doctor.
She ended up marrying a British man and they moved to America to start their life together.
She wanted the best for her nieces and grand-nieces, so she funded all of their education.
When OP’s great-aunt passed away, she left money for all of the female relatives in her family.
The Parents Used the Money for a Wedding
OP’s parents accessed the accounts that were set up for OP and her sister.
They ended up using the money to pay for OP’s brother’s wedding instead.
While OP was upset, her sister did not care since she did not want to attend college.
The Bank Account Was Drained
When OP went to the bank to get her money for school, she found out the majority of it was all gone.
There was roughly $13,000 left in the account.
She Was Furious
When OP asked her parents about it, they simply shrugged her off and said that they needed the money. That was the moment when OP found out where all of the money went.
OP was furious and decided to apply for student loans. She also moved out of their home. OP says she brings shame to the family for going to college.
Taking Legal Action
OP has now decided to sue her parents for the money that was left for her. She is all alone in her decision, as her entire family is against her doing this.
They are embarrassed and angry that OP is letting the world know about their private family business.
They also believe OP is putting money before family in this situation.
Feeling Alone
While OP has her friends on her side, she still doesn’t feel like they truly understand since they are all Americans and did not grow up in the culture she grew up in.
Getting Help
OP said that the student law center at their university was helping with all of the legalities.
She stated that she had proof that the money belonged to her and that she was doing everything she could to not make this into a huge criminal matter.
A Deal is Offered
OP’s brother also offered to pay for OP’s school if she drops the lawsuit. She agreed to do so as long as they have a legally binding contract.
OP’s brother was very upset, stating that it felt like she didn’t trust him. OP countered that he should have not accepted the money for this wedding.
Feeling Torn
OP is feeling somewhat ashamed for suing her parents but is also fighting for living a debt-free life post-college, how her great-aunt would have wanted.
Reddit Community
Many Reddit users commented on this thread, with very emotional opinions of their own.
One commented “Your parents didn’t borrow your money. They stole it. I hope you have all the documents to show that money was yours.”
Debate Over Spending Priorities
Another wrote that the parents seem to have put money ahead of the family when they chose to use OP’s college fund to pay for a wedding.
They said a wedding is a want, not a necessity (unlike an education).
Support for Written Agreement
Many users also applauded OP for having a formal agreement set before making a deal with her brother. One wrote “I’d say your request to have a written agreement with your brother was a very reasonable one.
Your parents showed that they could no longer be trusted when they stole your college money. Your brother’s response tells me that his plan was to get you to drop the lawsuit, then renege on the deal.”
What do you think? Would you be on OP’s side of this?
