A fed-up woman took to Reddit for advice after she told her mother-in-law she’d rather have an abortion than a baby. It shouldn’t have come as a surprise to anyone, but they were all shocked. Here is the full story.
They’re Still Young
OP and her husband have been married for several years, but they’re still young enough to have children.
They Want Mountains, Not Kids
Having kids is not in their plans, though, and it never has been. OP and her husband decided early on that they wanted to spend their lives climbing mountains, not changing diapers.
Their Family Isn’t Buying It
Of course, just because they don’t have kids and don’t want any, that doesn’t mean their family agrees. In fact, OP and her husband have had several conversations about kids with their family over the years.
They Have Been Very Firm
And every time they talk, OP and her husband are very clear that they will never have any kids.
She Had No Idea
The family keeps pushing, though, especially OP’s mother-in-law. What she never knew was that her son had a vasectomy early in his marriage, so kids really were off the table.
They Were Pretty Safe
The tension over kids came to a head during the pandemic lockdown. OP and her husband live in a small community that had relatively few COVID cases, so restrictions weren’t all that severe.
Pandemic Party Time
So one evening, OP and her husband invited a small group of family over for a backyard barbecue.
She Wanted Them to Get Busy
Almost immediately, OP’s mother-in-law started in on the couple about having kids. She said that since they were locked down together, it would be the perfect time to get things going.
He Came to the Rescue
OP’s husband stepped in right away and tried to shut his mother down. He reminded her that they’d been through that discussion before.
Accidents Do Happen
But OP’s mother-in-law kept pushing. She insisted that even though the couple was using birth control, accidents still happen.
He Shut Her Down
After a few rounds of back and forth, OP’s husband had enough. He told his mother he had a vasectomy, so there was no chance they were going to have a baby.
She Hushed Up
That seemed to have ended the conversation, and OP’s mother-in-law fell silent.
They Were Scheming
But as other members of the family started talking about other things, OP noticed that her mother-in-law and sister-in-law were looking at their phones and whispering to each other.

Finally, OP’s mother-in-law looked up with a smug smile on her face. She had been searching online and found out that vasectomies fail sometimes.

That ended the party with a bang, and OP’s mother-in-law rushed out in anger. The rest of the family left, too, but the incident wasn’t over.

As soon as she got home, the mother-in-law started posting on Facebook about how OP planned to murder her grandbabies. Not only that, her own son was going to assist.

Now, the rest of the family is seriously angry at OP and her husband, and they say she crossed a line.

But as far as OP is concerned, her mother-in-law left her no other choice. Redditors overwhelmingly support OP and the way she handled the situation.
They agree that she wasn’t getting through to her mother-in-law through polite conversations, so something more drastic was called for. Some even suggest that OP and her husband should cut her in-laws out of their lives completely.
