A jealous husband drew fire from Redditors for the demands he placed on his wife. He thinks he’s just asking her to be fair, though. Here is the full story.
He Doesn’t Make Much
OP is a 48-year-old man who works as a PE teacher and makes the typical low wage paid to teachers.
She’s the Breadwinner
On the other hand, OP’s wife works in the private sector and makes nearly 10 times as much money.
They Have an Agreement
To help even things out in terms of expenses, OP’s wife pays for 70% of their bills, while he covers the other 30%. It’s an arrangement that worked well for most of their marriage.
They’re Getting Old
But now, both OP’s parents and his in-laws are growing elderly, and that’s starting to change the family dynamic.
They’re Rolling in Dough
Recently, OP’s in-laws retired, and both his wife and her sister are giving their parents money each month.
Together, the two daughter’s are paying double what their parents receive in retirement money.
He Resents Their Money
OP thinks that’s all pretty silly since his in-laws both had high-paying jobs.
He also thinks their retirement should be enough to live on.
She Can Do What She Wants
But OP’s wife says that the money she’s giving her parents does not affect her ability to pay for her portion of the living expenses.
He Can’t Argue
And OP has to admit that she’s right about that.
They Need Help, Too
OP’s parents are retired, too, though. And they could also use some financial help, especially since their health is starting to decline.
Das Is in Bad Shape
His dad is in especially bad shape, with Parkinson’s taking a toll. OP is afraid the older man will end up in a nursing home without some financial help soon.
He Wants Her to Pay
So OP came up with an idea that he thinks is fair. He wants his wife to pay his parents on a monthly basis, just like she’s doing for her folks.
She Thinks He Should Pay
OP’s wife says it’s fine if he wants to use his own money to support his parents, assuming he can afford it.
She’s Not Chipping In
But OP’s wife has no intention of spending her money on her in-laws.
He Says She’s Cheap
OP doesn’t think that’s fair and says his wife is just being cheap.
She has money to burn, he says, so why shouldn’t she help his aging parents?
She Won’t Share at All
This isn’t the first time OP has run into an issue with his wife regarding money, either.
Years earlier, his sister had asked to borrow money for the down payment on a house, but OP’s wife refused.
She Wasn’t Worthy
Back then, OP’s wife said the sister was unreliable and that she’d probably never get her money back.
She Could Help If She Wanted
OP thinks his wife is really being unfair to his family overall and not helping them get ahead when she could do so.
They Were Servants
Not only is OP a teacher, but his parents were government workers. And his sister never really held down a job.
They Don’t Have Much
So OP’s family has always had to scrape by.
There’s Enough Money to Go Around
But OP’s in-laws immigrated to their country to make a better living, and they succeeded, with careers in medicine and tech.
She Should Help Out
Now, with OP’s wife making so much more than him, he thinks it’s only fair that his less wealthy family should get some help, too.
For the most part, Redditors think OP is way off base.
Most of them can’t believe how entitled he seems to be, and they remind him that his wife’s money does not belong to him. Many of them question whether he’s just with her for the money in the first place.
