She’s Focused on School
OP is a 22-year-old woman in England who is committed to her college studies. She doesn’t want the drama of a relationship, so she doesn’t date right now.
She Had Some Time
During one of the pandemic lockdowns, OP was home from school and had a bit of free time on her hands.
They Called Out of the Blue
While she was home, OP was surprised when a couple of her old high school friends contacted her. She hadn’t heard from them in years.
They Were a Couple
The old buddies were a 23-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman who were also a couple.
They Were Safe
The high school friends asked OP to have dinner with them one night and assured her that they and their place were COVID-free.
She Missed People
OP agreed to the little get-together and was happy to have somewhere to go. It was tough not being able to interact with anyone face-to-face during the pandemic.
She Had a Surprise
But when OP arrived at her friends’ place, the woman greeted her and said she had some news.
It Was a Setup!
The couple had also invited another guest to dinner. They were sure that OP would hit it off with her male friend’s 35-year-old boss.
She Would Make the Most of It
OP felt trapped and couldn’t believe her friend would set her up, especially with an old man. But she sat down at the table and tried to make the best of it.
She Tried to Be Friendly
After some light introductions, OP and the stranger started talking while their hosts finished preparing dinner.
He Knew What Was Wrong
Or at least, one of them started talking. The boss man spent the first 15 minutes or so telling OP exactly what was wrong with the country.
There Weren’t Enough Whites
And, as far as OP could tell, the guy’s major beef came down to the idea that there weren’t enough white people.
She Wanted to Know if He Took Money
So OP decided to turn the tables on the blowhard. She asked if he had received government aid as part of a furlough program to preserve jobs during the pandemic.
He Admitted It
The older man told OP that he had, indeed, been paid by the government.
His Money Wasn’t White
That’s when OP reminded him that the money the racist was accepting was made possible by now-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who has strong Indian ancestry.
She Wanted the Dirt
The boss fell silent at that point, and OP excused herself to the kitchen. There, her friend was excited to hear how it was going.
She Could Save Him
OP was confused by that question and asked what was going on. Her friend told her the older man was lonely after his recent divorce, and they hoped OP would hit it off with him.
He Wasn’t Her Type
Not too thrilled with the blind setup, OP told her friend she had no interest in a racist, uneducated, unattractive old man.
Things Got Weird
That jarred OP’s friend, but she asked her to stay for dinner since she wanted to catch up. OP agreed, but the meal was awkward.
He Didn’t Know Her Past
Then, the next day, OP received a text from a number she didn’t recognize. It was an “apology” saying the sender didn’t know she had Indian friends, only it used an ugly racial slur.
She Felt Betrayed
It didn’t take OP too long to figure out who the message came from, and she contacted her friend. Why had she given the jerk OP’s number?
He Was Into Her
The friend said the older man thought OP was attractive and wanted to see her again.
She Had No Right
But OP told her friend the guy disgusted her. OP was seriously ticked off that her friend gave him her number!
She Was Out
OP’s friend said she was being a snob, but OP stood her ground and said she didn’t want anything to do with the racist.
He Was Making Life Hard
As the days passed, OP’s friend started complaining to her that the boss was giving her boyfriend a hard time because OP turned him down.
It’s Not Her Fault
OP is concerned she’s causing problems for her friend’s career, but she never even agreed to be set up.
Her Friend Totally Blindsided Her
Redditors fully support OP and say that her friends blindsided her with the setup. They think that her friends should be apologizing to her, not blaming her for the racist attitudes of the boss.
