It’s often not acceptable for a teacher to take time off during the school year. Children need expert teaching and for teachers to be consistent. However, sometimes life isn’t easy and some people need time off.
Things Can’t Always be Planned
Although it might seem inappropriate to take time off, it is sometimes necessary for health or personal reasons.
She Supports the Teacher’s Needs
TikToker Valerie @valeriesexton shares her parental story in this video where she supports a teacher that takes time off during term time.
Even though many parents might find this rude or unprofessional, this mom sees the light and respects the honesty.
The Teacher Needed Time Off
Valerie received an email from her son’s teacher and all other parents were copied into the same email. Usually, parents would receive a personalized email.
As it was addressed to all parents, Valerie realized that it was an issue concerning all children.
The email advised that the teacher needed some time off during term time.
Reply All
Considering there were other parents copied into the email, it was easy for someone to reply and, therefore, copy every parent in so they could see the response.
A Rude Email Reply From a Parent
One parent decided to reply to the email, with or without knowing other parents could see, to say “Have you seriously taken a vacation for several days before the end of the school year and left the kids with a sub?”
Valerie’s son was still awake when she saw the email, so she casually asked him if the teacher was not at school and how long they took off.
Unforeseen Circumstances
Valerie’s son said that the teacher was not there for 2 days.
Admittedly, she does not consider 2 days as a vacation and quickly understands that the time might have been necessary for personal reasons.
We all have things we need to take time off for, it is simply part of life.
She Replied to Show Respect and Be Grateful
Hence, Valerie decided to reply solely to the teacher to let her know she is doing a good job and that there isn’t much term time left so good job for holding out and only taking a small amount of time off.
Valerie wanted to encourage her and not bring her down like the other parent attempted to do.
After all, this woman is her son’s teacher and she wants her to have a positive well-being so she can be the best person to educate her child.
Another Parent Agreed With Her
The following morning, another parent replied to everyone to let the teacher know they are doing a great job.
Valerie was happy to see this yet questioned why she kept her reply private.
She should have shown the teacher grace and gratitude in front of everyone like this other parent did.
Showing Respect to the Teacher
With this thought in mind, Valerie made another response so more parents could see how they felt.
Instead of making the teacher feel and look bad, they wanted to show respect and empathy.
The Odd Parent Out Must Feel Stupid Now
Not long after, other parents followed suit to respect and thank the teacher. The odd parent out must now feel stupid, as they should.
