A woman turned to Reddit to vent her feelings about ordering food when her children are asleep so that she doesn’t have to share with them.
Her Secret Stash
The Original Poster (OP), a mother of four, said she feels guilty about secretly ordering food so she doesn’t have to share it with her children. She asked the Reddit community if it made her a bad mother.
After a Long Day
On occasion, OP will order herself a meal or snack from Ubereats or Doordash after a hard day. She usually waits to order after her children go to bed. She doesn’t want her kids to find out and want some.
Keeping Things a Secret
If OP orders secret take-out, she ensures she is the first one up the next day and takes out the trash to hide all evidence.
The Kids Found Out
One morning, OP’s kids woke up before her and found the empty take-out containers. When OP woke up they confronted her about the trash and why they didn’t get any.
A Special Treat Just for Mum
OP told them she only ordered enough for herself and there was nothing left to share. She thought this would have been the end of the whole debacle.
Dad Was Very Upset
The next week OP’s children stayed with their father, they stay with their dad one week out of every month. The children told their father about what their mother does. The dad was very upset and believed that OP was using the money he was sending for the kids for her own takeout treats and meals.
Co-parenting and Money Negotiations
OP said the children’s father gives her $100 for each child a month to help pay for expenses. OP believes that this isn’t much, but she is fine with it because he will typically help pay for anything else that comes up unexpectedly. OP said no payments were court-ordered and this is just a system they came up with themselves.
She Uses Her Own Money
OP has a job as a daycare worker and said that she uses her own money to buy meals from Ubereats or Doordash.
She Was Accused of Being a Bad Mother
The father also told OP that she was being a bad mother overall for not thinking of the kids when ordering the food and that she should have just waited for the week/nights when the kids were at his house instead of sneaking around with the takeout trash.
She Wants to Treat Herself
OP argues that after a bad day, she wants to treat herself to takeout. She said it helps cheer her up when she can relax at the end of the night with food already made and delivered to her.
Trying to Save Money
OP also said if she were to order something for everyone, it would have cost a lot more money and that she typically just gets the leftovers when she has to share her food with her kids.
What Did Reddit Users Have to Say?
The Reddit community chimed in, with over 2,200 comments on the thread.
Most users commented that OP was not in the wrong for only ordering takeout for herself.
Many of the comments were about how many parents have their own secret stashes in their pantries and that it was totally okay to keep some separation between kids’ and parents’ food indulgences.
Ingenious Hiding Spots
One Reddit user told a particularly unique way of stashing her favorite snacks. She wrote “I’m the only woman in the house. I have two tampon boxes in my linen closet: one with tampons and one with snacks.”
Another user wrote that she used different kinds of packaging to keep her snacks safe from the rest of their family.
“I have a box in my freezer that once held breaded cauliflower. It has been where I stash my chocolate bars for quite a while now. Nobody else in the family wants anything to do with cauliflower.”
What do you think? Is it okay for OP to keep ordering her own food once her kids go to bed?
