Tommy Tuberville is so dead set against abortion that he’s willing to sacrifice the future of the American military. If the two don’t seem related, you might be in for a surprise. Here is what’s happening.
No Promotions for You
Back in February of 2023, Alabama senator Tommy Tuberville announced that he was planning to block all military promotions that require senate approval.
Collateral Damage From Abortion Fight
That move came in response to the fallout of the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.
That ruling sent abortion laws back into the hands of individual states.
Austin Broke the Law?
In the aftermath, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made a ruling of his own that many say violates federal law.
Military Pays for Abortions
Under Austin’s new policy, the military reimburses any personnel who have to travel across state lines to get an abortion.
Hey, You Can’t Do That!
Tuberville and his like-minded conservatives say that puts Austin squarely on the wrong side of a federal law that prohibits Department of Defense money from being used for abortions.
Tommy Tied Them Up
So Tuberville’s response was to hold the upper reaches of the military hostage and create a gridlock throughout the ranks of officers.
It Goes to the Top
The traffic jam has now reached the highest level of the armed forces.
Biden’s New Chief
With General Mark Milley on the verge of retirement October 1, President Biden has picked Air Force General C.Q. Brown to become his new Joint Chiefs chairman.
Can’t Confirm Him
But since that confirmation hearing has to go through the Senate, Tuberville’s block is holding up the proceedings.
Grady Pulls a Double
That means Brown remains in limbo and dumps double duty on vice chairman Navy Admiral Christopher Grady.
He’ll have to serve as interim chair if Brown isn’t confirmed by October 1.
And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. For every promotion that gets iced at the upper level, there’s one more promotion at a lower level that can’t happen, either.
A Top-To-Bottom Problem
So now we have colonels who can’t get promoted to general, which blocks the career advancement of lieutenant generals. And so on down the line.
Morale Is Sagging
It’s a situation that’s starting to take a toll on morale throughout the military according to many with a bird’s eye view of the snarl.
Champions Are Walking Out
Air Force General Mark Kelly says, “We’re on the fringe of losing a generation of champions.”
Tough on Families
Kelly, who leads Air Combat Command, says that family men and women in particular are getting fed up with the blocked promotions.
They Get No Respect
They’re willing to die for their country, Kelly says, but their country is doing nothing but putting roadblocks in their way.
The uncertainty about where they’ll be, and when they might get moved, is unnerving at best.
They Want Security
Many highly trained and dedicated service people are now choosing to just walk away so that they can establish more secure and stable career paths.
He Has a Message
Kelly also has a message for politicians like Tuberville and any others who think they’re doing a service to their country with their stonewalling.
Allies Getting Antsy
He says that America’s allies are getting antsy about the talent drain in the military and the growing discomfort of U.S. officers.
Enemies Dancing in the Aisles
But there is someone who’s celebrating, Kelly says.
In fact, he thinks you can hear champagne corks popping in China if you listen hard enough.
