Recently, legendary actor Robert De Niro testified in a gender discrimination lawsuit brought against him by a former employee, Graham Chase Robinson. Here’s the full story.
The Lawsuit
Robinson, who worked as an executive assistant and later as Vice President of Production and Finance for De Niro for 11 years, accused the actor of being an abusive boss.
The Allegations
The lawsuit revolves around allegations of gender discrimination, a retaliation lawsuit filed by De Niro against Robinson, and Robinson’s claims of improper treatment during her employment.
The Background
Robinson’s legal battle with De Niro began when she resigned from Canal Productions Inc., where she had worked since 2008.
In response, De Niro sued her for $6 million, accusing her of misusing the company credit card, watching TV during work hours, and misappropriating frequent-flier miles.
Vulgar, Inappropriate, and Gendered Comments
Robinson, however, filed a lawsuit of her own in 2019, claiming that De Niro had subjected her to “vulgar, inappropriate, and gendered comments,” as well as overworking and underpaying her.
Work Relationship
In the courtroom in New York, De Niro testified under scrutiny, occasionally appearing irritated as he defended his interactions with Robinson.
Despite their history and work relationship, De Niro disputed Robinson’s capabilities as a conscientious employee.
Her Responsibilities
He mentioned that the ongoing legal proceedings had affected his opinion of her, saying, “Not after everything I’m going through now.”
The former executive assistant had played a significant role in De Niro’s life, even being listed as his emergency contact at one point.
She was responsible for tasks such as organizing greeting cards for his children and helping with various personal matters.
The Fall Incident
Robinson’s lawyer also brought up an instance where De Niro had asked her to accompany him to the hospital at an early hour.
“That was one time when I cracked my back falling down the stairs,” De Niro replied.
This Is All Nonsense
De Niro’s testimony was characterized by moments of tension, as he sought to clarify certain points and responded passionately to the allegations made by Robinson.
“It is not like I’m asking for her to go out there and scrape floors and mop the floor. So, this is all nonsense,” De Niro said.
De Niro’s Girlfriend Is Also Involved
The trial has also involved De Niro’s girlfriend, Chen, who gave birth to his seventh child this year and is actively participating in the legal proceedings.
Chen is expected to provide her testimony during the trial.
Incredibly Demeaning
Robinson has claimed that De Niro diverted her role from a professional executive position to one that involved domestic and household tasks.
She expressed her frustration with these changes during her deposition, describing them as “incredibly demeaning.”
Intended to “Humiliate”
Also, Robinson shared text messages between De Niro’s employees in 2022, suggesting that De Niro’s lawsuit against her was a form of retaliation.
The texts implied that the legal action was intended to “humiliate” her.
“They and Their Supporters Are Moot as Humans”
