That was the year OP’s dad died, and it didn’t take too long before her mother found a new husband.
He Only Liked Boys
OP’s stepfather didn’t want much to do with her because he wasn’t interested in raising a daughter. He had 2 teenage boys of his own at the time and was happy to have OP’s brother join the family.
She Gave Her Up
Instead of fighting for her daughter, OP’s mom shipped her off to live with her aunt!

Through the rest of her childhood and until she went off to college, OP’s mother visited her about once a month. She hardly ever called on holidays.

OP is grateful for the upbringing her aunt and uncle provided her. They couldn’t have kids of their own and treated her like a daughter.

Then OP’s mom told her that she split up with her husband, which left her pretty much broke. And OP’s brother didn’t want anything to do with his mom now that she couldn’t help him financially.

Then, OP’s mom dropped the real bombshell that stopped the meal cold.

The older woman told OP that she had a heart condition and needed surgery. Since she didn’t have much money, she wanted OP to pay for it.
