Putin Slams ‘Rotten’ U.S. Politics in Wake of Trump’s Legal Turmoil, Casts Doubt on American Democracy

Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the U.S. political system in light of the ongoing legal challenges faced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, sparking discussions about the state of American democracy and its implications.

The Rottenness of the American Political System

At an Eastern Economic Forum gathering in Vladivostok, President Vladimir Putin labeled the U.S. political system as “rotten” due to the legal issues surrounding former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Not In a Position to Teach Democracy

With reference to Trump’s prosecution, Putin said “For us what is happening in today’s conditions, in my opinion, is good because it shows the rottenness of the American political system, which cannot pretend to teach others democracy,” he said.

Persecution for Political Reasons

Putin went on to say, “Everything that is happening with Trump is the persecution of a political rival for political reasons.

That’s what it is. And this is being done in front of the public of the United States and the whole world.”

Putin Has Criticized the U.S. in the Past

Putin has frequently criticized the US for its actions in Ukraine as well as its role in the NATO bloc, which has expanded toward the Russian borders during Putin’s time in office.

Trump Praised Putin

Trump, meanwhile, has praised the Russian leader as a stronger and more strategic leader than Barack Obama during his time in the Oval Office. 

Trump has also touted his good relations with Putin during his term.

While the U.S.-Russia diplomatic relations were still frigid during Trump’s presidency, they plunged to the pre-Cold War lows during Biden’s time in office after the Ukraine invasion.

Putin has denied that Trump had special ties with Russia.

Putin responded positively to Trump’s claims, noting, “We hear that Mr. Trump says that he will solve pressing problems in a few days, including the Ukrainian crisis. Well, this cannot but bring happiness. This is good,” he remarked.
