Period Jokes Push Friendship to Breaking Point: Transphobia or Just Setting Boundaries?

This story is about Dina and her friendship struggles with her two friends, Caitlyn and Violet. When Violet’s inappropriate jokes clash with Dina after a bad day, things turn heated. Let’s take a look at their story and decide: where’s the line between a joke and going too far?

Supportive Friends

Dina had two close friends: Caitlyn and Violet. Violet had undergone a male-to-female transition. Dina and Caitlyn have always supported Violet’s journey, using the correct pronouns and names that Violet preferred.

The trio generally got along well, except for a recurring issue: Violet’s unique sense of humor when it came to period-related comments.

On multiple occasions, whenever Dina seemed upset or agitated, Violet would laugh condescendingly and shout, “Someone’s got their monthly!”

This was upsetting for Dina, who felt belittled by these remarks.

Yet, the irony was that when Dina and Caitlyn genuinely discussed their periods, sharing stories or seeking advice, Violet would be visibly repulsed, telling them to change the subject!

She would claim no one needed to know about their discussions, even though Dina and Caityln were talking amongst themselves.

Dina’s Rough Day

One particularly rough day at work drained Dina emotionally. Everything that could have gone wrong did, and she felt as if no one cared about her struggles.

Needing some companionship, she texted Caitlyn and Violet, proposing a meetup at a café. Caitlyn declined the outing and said she wasn’t in the mood to go out but offered to chat over the phone.

Violet, however, couldn’t resist making another period joke, suggesting that Dina and Caityln “both got our periods at the same time.”

Exhausted and emotionally frayed, Dina snapped. She retorted, “If you don’t have a Vagina, you’re in no place to lecture us about how our periods work. Stop blaming every inconvenience in our life on a natural FEMALE body cycle.” She put emphasis on the word “female,” which seemed to be the last straw for Violet.

Unexpected Backlash

The messages from Violet that followed were accusations. “Didn’t expect a transphobe in my friend group of all places,” she texted.

Another message read, “I always knew there’s something you hate about me; now I know it. You’re disgusting.”

Dina’s Shock

Dina was taken aback. She never intended to be hurtful. It was just that Violet’s continuous jabs had become too much for her to bear, especially on a day as bad as this one.

Caitlyn’s Defense

To Dina’s relief, Caitlyn came to her defense. She said that she had privately asked Violet to stop making those period jokes in the past.

Caitlyn emphasized that Dina’s reaction wasn’t about transphobia but rather about setting boundaries.

Blocked and Confused

However, Violet didn’t see it that way. The argument escalated, and Violet blocked both her and Caitlyn before Dina could process what was happening.

Dina was in turmoil. While Caitlyn assured her that Violet was being unreasonable, Dina couldn’t help but wonder: was she wrong for making that comment? She took to Reddit to ask their opinion.

The Line Between Humor and Insult

Reddit users collectively agreed that it’s not transphobic to ask someone to stop making derogatory jokes about periods.

Most users said mocking someone by blaming their emotions for being on their period isn’t humor but a blatant insult rooted in misogyny.

Selective Outrage

The community criticized Violet’s selective outrage in accusing someone of being transphobic when called out for inappropriate behavior.

Ignorance and Offensive Remarks

While some thought that referencing a vagina might come off as transphobic, the larger consensus was that it was more about addressing the friend’s blatant ignorance and offensive remarks.

One user said, “Your friend keeps making misogynistic jokes and even asks you to stop talking about something completely natural because she deems it “disgusting,” all whilst obviously having no clue about periods herself.

No wonder you’ve snapped at some point. She constantly made insulting and offensive comments – funny how you made only one comment she found offensive, and she’s already had enough of it.”
