Nancy Pelosi announced that she is running for reelection for her 19th term in office. Critics continue to raise questions about term limits, as well as age limits, in office. Here’s the full story.
Pelosi Is Running for Reelection
At 83-years-old Nancy Pelosi has represented San Francisco in Congress for over 35 years. She recently announced that she will run for reelection again in 2024.
Seeking 19th Term in Office
Pelosi stepped down as the Democratic House leader, but she continues to represent San Francisco in Congress. If elected, this would be Pelosi’s 19th term in office.
Pelosi Posted on X
In a post on X, Pelosi wrote, “Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery.” Pelosi wants to “show the world” that America’s “flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL.”
She Wants Your Vote
Pelosi ended her post with “That is why I am running for reelection – and respectfully ask for your vote.”
San Francisco Has Gone Downhill
The replies to her post were brutal. KC said that since Pelosi was elected, San Francisco started seeing more “drug addicts, cesspool filth, homeless camps, daylight looting, and night time muggings.”
KC told Pelosi in a comment that she has “failed America” and “destroyed” the people she was supposed to be representing.
Retire and Go Away
Another X user, Riley, told Pelosi that she needed to “retire and go far away” from San Francisco.
Tyler, a 20-year resident of California commented on Pelosi’s post saying, “I feel like we need new leadership.”
The longer some politicians are allowed to stay in office, the louder critics shout about term limits.
Mental Competency Tests
Nikki Haley, who is running for president in 2024, is one of several politicians calling for term limits for members of Congress and the Senate. Haley also suggested “mental competency tests for politicians over 75.”
Americans have concerns about the mental and physical competency of older politicians. Critics are concerned about the average age of leaders on Capitol Hill.
Mitch McConnell Freezes
At 81-years-old, Mitch McConnell is the Minority Leader of the United States Senate. McConnell froze while speaking at two different public events. Both incidents were within two months of each other.
Americans Are “Seriously Concerned”
The president of the United States, Joe Biden, is 80-years-old. According to one study, “73 percent of Americans” said they are “seriously concerned” that Biden’s age will negatively affect his physical and mental state.
Frail, 90-Year-Old Senator
The oldest and longest-serving female senator in the US is Dianne Feinstein. Feinstein is 90-years-old and is on her sixth term in the Senate.
She recently faced scrutiny when she returned to Capitol Hill after recovering from shingles. Critics commented on how “frail” Feinstein appeared.
Sick Leave for Senator
Feinstein was on leave for two and a half months before she returned to Washington. She said her doctors advised her to “work a lighter schedule.”
It’s Because She’s a Woman
When fellow Democrats called for Sen. Dianne Feinstein to step down due to her health issues, Nancy Pelosi defended her by saying, “If she were a guy, you wouldn’t even hear about it. You know it, and I know it.”
When Pelosi made the decision to retire from House leadership, she said she was clearing the way for “a new generation” of Democrats to lead.
She was given the title “Speaker Emerita,” which meant even though she retired, she was allowed to keep her title as an honor.
Pelosi’s campaign said that her priority is “to ensure that, come 2025, she is serving alongside a President Joe Biden and a Speaker Hakeem Jeffries.”
Nancy Pelosi’s supporters say she is an “influential lawmaker, pivotal party figure, and strong fundraiser for Democrats.”
