Her Nextdoor Neighbor Thought She Had the Right to Use Her Garden While She Was Away…

Have you ever had a neighbor who thinks they’re entitled to your property just because it’s adjacent to theirs? Well, Izzy sure has, and it’s not a pleasant experience. Let’s take a look at her situation.

She Had a Big Yard

Izzy was a 27-year-old woman who lived in a nice neighborhood in the middle of town. She was fortunate enough to have a big yard, which her grandma passed down in a will, and she lived alone.

However, her neighbor, who went by the name of Emma, had a much smaller yard and a large dog often accompanied by her son, Ethan, who had a reputation for being destructive.

A Weird Request

Izzy worked from 7 am to 5 pm, leaving her home and yard unattended during the day.

Emma, who was an avid gardener, had initially asked Izzy if her son could play in her yard while she was at work, to which Izzy reluctantly agreed.

However, she made it clear that Ethan and the dog would need to be gone by the time she returned home.

At first, everything went smoothly, and Ethan played happily in the yard with his dog.

But things took a turn for the worse when Izzy brought home a new cat, a beautiful ginger feline that she named Ginger.

Like many cats, Ginger loved to bask in the sun, and she would often sunbathe in the yard alongside Ethan and his dog.

But one day, Izzy returned home to discover that Ginger was nowhere to be found.

After searching the yard and the house, she eventually found the poor cat hiding under the bed, injured and in pain.

What Could Have Happened?

Upon closer inspection, Izzy discovered that Ginger had a bite mark on her side.

She rushed her beloved pet to the vet, where Ginger received treatment and had a bandage wrapped around her waist for the next week or so.

In an effort to find out what had happened, Izzy checked her security cameras and was shocked by what she saw.

It appeared that Ethan had tried to move Ginger from her favorite spot in the sun, and when she had swiped at him, the dog had attacked her.

It was not a bite mark, as Izzy had originally thought, but a scratch from the dog’s paw.

Her Neighbor Was in Denial

When Izzy confronted Emma with the evidence, she denied that her son or dog had anything to do with the incident.

Emma even went as far as to suggest that Izzy was overreacting, stating that “he’s just a kid, and Ginger is fine!”

Izzy stood her ground, telling Emma that neither Ethan nor the dog was allowed on her property again.

But Emma refused to back down, insisting that her son and dog should be entitled to the yard while Izzy was away because “After all, you can’t just let it go to waste!”

Izzy reassured Karen of her decision, to which Karen responded, “Ma’am, YOU NEED TO LEAVE.”

Izzy was absolutely shocked and confused by Karen’s behavior.

She couldn’t understand why Karen would act so entitled to her yard when she had already allowed her son to play there.

What Should She Do?

Izzy considered her options, but small claims court seemed like too much for this situation.

She just wanted to be able to enjoy her yard in peace. So she took to Reddit to see if the community could offer her any advice.

They Gave Her Some Great Advice

Reddit users had plenty of advice for Izzy. They urged her to document Ginger’s injury, keep the information, and not let Karen, EK, or the dog back on her property.

They told Izzy to call the police if they did come back since they would be trespassing.

Someone also suggested that she take Karen to small claims court for the amount of the vet bill and install a fence to prevent EK and his dog from getting into her yard.

A Strong Fence

One Reddit user pointed out that “strong fences make good neighbors” and advised Izzy to get a fence installed.

They also cautioned that depending on where she lived, she could be liable if EK hurt himself while on her property.

For that reason, they recommended that Izzy not allow anyone access to her yard when she was not home to avoid any potential lawsuits.

And Some No Trespassing Signs

Another Reddit user advised Izzy to put up “no trespassing” signs and record herself telling Karen that they were not allowed on her property.

This way, if she called the police for trespassing, she would have the due diligence needed for them to handle it and give Karen a trespass warning or citation.

Finally, Reddit users warned Izzy that allowing Karen’s son and/or dog to play on her property could cause harm and expose her to liability.

By telling them they were not allowed, she could protect herself from financial liability and keep her cat safe.

She Took Action

With all this advice in mind, Izzy thanked the community for their help and decided to take action. She’s installed a fence and put up “no trespassing” signs.

She’s also made Karen sign a contract stating that she or any other member of her family is not allowed on her property, and if they do, she isn’t liable for anything that happens.

If she breaks the contract, she can sue them for trespassing!

Thanks to the advice of Reddit users, Izzy was able to protect her property and her beloved cat from entitled neighbors!
