“Parents have almost forgotten what the role of a parent is,” Ne-Yo remarked, expressing his perplexity at the idea of young children making significant life choices.
If You Let a Child Only Eat Candy They Will
He illustrated his point by stating, “If you let this five-year-old boy decide to eat candy all day, he’s going to do that… Like when did it become a good idea to let a five-year-old, let a six-year-old, let a 12-year-old make a life-changing decision for themselves? When did that happen? Like, I don’t understand that. I don’t get that.”
If They Can’t Drive, They Shouldn’t Choose Gender
Ne-Yo further highlighted the inconsistency, mentioning that while a young child can’t legally drive a car yet, they are allowed to decide their gender.

“Love who you love, do what you do. I just personally come from an era where a man was a man and a woman was a woman. And it wasn’t but two genders and that’s just how I rocked it.”
Addressing the Landscape of Gender
Ne-Yo also addressed the expanding landscape of gender identities, saying, “Now you could identify as goldfish if you feel like it, that isn’t my business… It becomes my business when you try to make me play the game with you.”
‘We Live in a Weird Time’
Concluding his thoughts, Ne-Yo underscored the unique times we live in, stating, “It’s just, we live in a weird time, man.”
He Apologised
An apology was released on X (previously Twitter), “I’d like to express my deepest apologies to anyone that I may have hurt with my comments on parenting and gender identity.”
Then Took It Back
Ne-Yo asserts that this apology was written and posted by his publisher and he does not apologize for holding these views. “I WILL NOT BE BULLIED INTO APOLOGIZING FOR HAVING AN OPINION. AGREEING TO DISAGREE IS NOT A DECLARATION OF WAR.”
