Mitt Romney has confirmed his plans for the 2024 election and has strong opinions about Donald Trump and other modern Republicans.
Romney’s Intimate Thoughts Revealed in New Biography
Sitting down with CBS’s Norah O’Donnell, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) and his wife, Ann, discussed a new biography that was recently released about him.
Romney: A Reckoning was written by McKay Coppins, who provided intimate insight into Romney’s life by way of his private journals.
Private Journals Show Romney’s Opinion of Trump
In those journals, Romney spoke candidly about former president Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump represents a failure of character, which is changing…the heart of our nation,” he said.
Republicans Don’t “Believe in the Constitution,” Romney Says
Romney condemned the modern Republican party: “A very large portion of my party really doesn’t believe in the Constitution.”
Romney has stood against others in his party, most notably when he voted to impeach Donald Trump despite being the only Republican senator to do so.
Trump Wasn’t the Only Target of Romney’s Criticism
In addition to overarching criticisms of the party and former president, Romney’s journals revealed his opinions of other colleagues. He was also particularly hard on himself.
“Awful, Shameful, Sorrowful…I Am So, so Very Sorry”
One excerpt from his journal highlighted that fact: “Stupid, stupid, stupid. Awful, shameful, sorrowful. How I will have let so many down…it is overwhelmingly depressing, even agonizing. I am so, so very sorry.”

Will Romney Run for President Again?
O’Donnell asked Romney several pointed questions during the interview, including whether he would be running for president in 2024. Romney laughed at the idea.
“Perhaps if Godzilla Comes In” – Romney Not Planning to Run
“Perhaps if Godzilla comes in and removes all the other candidates and so forth,” he said. But other than Godzilla stepping in, no, I’m not running for president. Not giving it any thought.
A “Pariah in the Republican Party”
Romney discussed his feelings about his party and how different it is today from the one he joined.
O’Donnell addressed the changes, calling him a “pariah in the Republican Party.”
“I Don’t Really Have a Home in My Party”
“That’s saying it in a gentle way, yeah,” Romney agreed. “I don’t really have a home in my party.
Romney Looks to His Predecessors
The now 76-year-old career politician described his idea of the Republican Party as one developed by the likes of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and John McCain.
“Those Are the People That Have Shaped Our Party”
“Those are the people that have shaped our party: anti-Putin, anti-Russia, anti-authoritarians, anti-Kim John Un…the character of our leaders makes a difference and it shapes the character of our country. That’s the party I’ve come from.”

Acknowledging the shift in party ideals, Romney continued, “I don’t recognize that in the great majority of our party today. And that, for me, is very troubling.”
Romney Reacts to Speaker of the House Decision
Romney has shown his disdain for party decisions in vocal ways recently, as was evidenced in his reaction to the new Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.
Romney said, “Apparently experience isn’t necessary for the speaker job.”

Romney announced in September that he is not planning to run for re-election to the Senate in 2024.
“Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders,” he said.
