An Oregon woman battling advanced breast cancer is claiming that she has been denied further treatment at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) facilities after expressing criticism of transgender ideology to her doctor and other staff members.
A Long-Standing Connection Severed
Marlene Barbera, who has had a long-standing connection with the Richmond Family Medicine Clinic (RFMC) in Portland, disclosed that her ties with the clinic had been severed due to her remarks on transgender ideology.
She Was a Patient for 12 Years
Having been a patient at RFMC for 12 years, Barbera’s primary care physician was affiliated with the clinic. Her physician had also treated some of her family members as well.
Getting Treatment for Cancer
Barbera has been undergoing treatment for her illness and had an upcoming double mastectomy procedure scheduled at RFMC.
They Barred Her From Treatment
Her access to this crucial treatment has been jeopardized after OHSU, the medical organization encompassing RFMC, reportedly barred her from further care at their facilities.
They Cited Her Anti-LGBTQ Remarks As the Reason
This decision resulted from what they deemed “disrespectful and hurtful remarks about our LGBTQ community and staff.”
She Didn’t Like the Trans Flag in Reception
Barbera, who identifies as a “gender-critical woman” and challenges gender ideology, expressed her concerns about a transgender flag displayed in the RFMC reception area.
She Messaged Her Doctor
In a message via MyChart, she conveyed her apprehensions to her doctor, stating, “I have been threatened on Twitter by trans activists with rape and death — so it is daunting to go for medical treatment with that banner proclaiming that what I am, an adult human female, is a mere opt-in category for any gender non-conforming male and not a reality.”
Her Concerns Were Dismissed
Unfortunately, her concerns were dismissed and her private message was seen by multiple clinic staff members.
It Became Difficult to Communicate With Them
Following this incident, her communication with the clinic became strained, and she encountered difficulties when trying to discuss her blood work over the phone.
The Interactions Escalated
Barbera’s interaction with a receptionist escalated, resulting in Barbera’s alleged dismissal from the clinic.
They Dismissed Her From All Facilities
After a series of exchanges, she received a MyChart message from OHSU practice manager Stein Berger accusing her of making “transphobic remarks.”
In response, Berger reportedly confirmed Barbera’s dismissal from all OHSU facilities.
She Remains Firm in Her Beliefs
Despite her ongoing battle with severe chronic agitated depression and her own health challenges, Barbera remains steadfast in her stance against gender ideology.
She’s Considering Taking Legal Action
She emphasizes that gender ideology is akin to a religion and expresses concerns about its impact on women and children.
While Barbera is considering potential actions against the hospital, her main focus remains on her fight against breast cancer.
