Maxim Australia Names Transgender Athlete One of Its “Hot 100 Women” – Should She Be on the List?

In a turn that has sparked debate and outrage online, Maxim Australia has added a transgender woman to its “Hot 100” list for exceptional women. But not everyone agrees with the decision.

A Polarizing Choice

“No fear of backlash” – The Australian branch of men’s lifestyle magazine Maxim has named former athlete and transgender woman Danielle Laidley to its roster of 100 exceptional women, also known as the ‘Hot 100.’

But this decision has been criticized by some.

The 92nd Woman

The former Australian Football League player has taken the 92nd place on the list of 100 women, with first place going to Barbie star Margot Robbie.

They’ve Had a Huge Year

Maxim has referred to their list as “the definitive list of Australia’s most influential, successful, powerful, newsworthy, talented and beautiful women.”

Maxim Australia’s Editor-in-Chief Santi Pintado described this year’s entry as a list of Australian women who “have impressed, made headlines, or simply had a huge year.”

Provoking Questions

Since its announcement, the selection of the 56-year-old Laidley has drawn considerable attention and stoked the flames of online debate.

Some have questioned the magazine’s motivations by including what many consider a controversial selectee.

Gains Speaks Out

One such critic is women’s sports advocate Riley Gains, who has a significant online following. She took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share her opinion on Laidley’s inclusion.

No Fear of Backlash

“#92 of top 100 hottest ‘women’ in the world according to Maxim magazine in Australia,” Gains began.

“How did we get to a point where companies/institutions/publications can do this with no fear of backlash?”

They Must Be Devastated

Irish radio host Niall Boyl also weighed in on the confusion over Maxim’’s decision, writing, “Voted one of Australia’s ‘Hottest Women’ according to Maxim magazine this week.

I’m sure the other 12,779,999 women in Australia’s population must be devastated not to be picked.”

Serious Concerns

Another vocal online critic is Oli London, an internet personality from the UK who once identified as a transgender woman before detransitioning, and has been controversial in his own right.

London didn’t just criticize the selection but also shared some concerning information regarding Laidley’s past.

Stalking Accusation

“The World’s 92nd Hottest Woman, according to Maxim Magazine Australia, was arrested in 2020 for stalking a woman and bombarding her with threatening calls and texts,” London shared.

Does She Deserve Praise?

“Dani Laidley, a biological man, sent his victim 100 threatening messages and calls including threatening violence and to ‘ram’ the victim with his car,” London continued.

“Do you think a man who stalks women deserves to be celebrated as the 92nd hottest woman in the world?”

She Pleads Guilty

And London isn’t wrong. Back in 2020, Laidley pleaded guilty to stalking charges but narrowly avoided conviction by opting for rehabilitation treatment instead.

She was also given an ‘adjourned undertaking’ order with a requirement of 18 months of good behavior.

Drugs and Gender

According to an AFL press release at the time, Laidley attributed this behavior to her being “immersed in a drug-addled culture,” and struggles with her ongoing gender transition.

A More Rounded Person

A former AFL player and coach, Laidley’s gender transition was made public back in 2020.

In a 2021 interview with the Saturday Herald Sun, she discussed her transition, stating, “I feel I am a much more rounded person.

I feel that I can let myself love and be loved now, instead of self-sabotaging in lots of different ways from an early age.”

Not the Only One

Laidley is not the only transgender woman to face backlash over a similar selection.

Trans activist Dyan Mulvaney has been the topic of hot debate this month after being named “Woman of the Year” by Attitude, a UK-based LGBTQ+ publication.

Discussion and questioning continue to pour in. So far, neither Laidley nor Maxim Australia have responded to criticisms of the ‘Hot 100’ list.
