Right-wingers may want to impeach President Biden as their first order of business. But at least one member of their own party has told them to grow up and knock off the noise. Here is what’s happening.
A Huge Distraction
As congress moves into another messy session of negotiations to come up with next year’s spending budget, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy has other fires to put out.
Greene Has an Agenda
Back in August, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican representative from Georgia made it clear that the budget wasn’t her top priority.
She’ll Cause Trouble
And Greene vowed to make herself into a human progress barrier for any budget deals if her true priority wasn’t addressed first.
Impeach the Bum!
What’s Greene’s top priority? Why, impeaching President Joe Biden, of course!
Wielding Their Newfound Power
Ever since the Republicans took over the House of Representatives in January of 2023, Greene and her ultra conservative counterparts have been pushing for impeachment.
Nepotism on Display
Their main beef with Biden from a legal standpoint is that they say he used his power as vice president under Barack Obama to swing business deals for his son, Hunter. Republicans have so far produced no evidence supporting these wild claims.
Budget Held Hostage
The situation is so dire, Greene says, that she won’t support any budget deal before the September 30 deadline unless the House votes to start an impeachment hearing before then.
Facts Are Hard
But the facts of the case just might trip her up. They’re already dividing the party.
No Connection Found
Though Hunter Biden’s foreign business affairs continue to be under intense investigation, Republican representative Ken Buck from Colorado says no connection to the president has been made to this point.
He’ll Ruffle Feathers
And Buck won’t stop there, even if it means rankling feathers in his party.
Greene’s Timeline Absurd
During an interview on MSNBC over the second weekend in September, Buck said that Greene’s timeline for an impeachment hearing is absurd.
Biden Not off the Hook
Buck doesn’t dismiss the idea that Biden should be subject to impeachment, at least eventually.
No Rush to Judgment
But the representative said that there is no need to rush into a hearing with no hard facts. As far as he can tell, no evidence has been found linking Biden to criminal activity.
Keep It Rolling
Instead, Buck thinks Republicans should work together to try and figure out a way to keep the government working, even if that means signing a stopgap spending deal with the Senate.
She’s Out of Line
He sees Greene’s bluster and back-biting as unnecessary distractions that won’t serve anyone well on either side of the aisle.
They Have a History
And this is not the first time that Greene and Buck have butted heads in the party.
She Attacked Her Kin
Back in July, it was Buck who confirmed publicly that the House Freedom Caucus had booted Greene from their ranks. Seems she had been attacking fellow members of the group and disrupting their progress.
She Just Can’t Get Along
The Caucus is generally seen as the most conservative group of Republicans in the House, so Greene’s ouster is a slap in the face.
She Carries a Big Stick
Now, the representative from Georgia just may be intent on taking out her frustration on the government at large. And you can bet she’ll wield her impeachment stick for all it’s worth.
