Mary and her partner, Nathan, recently embarked on their parenting journey with the birth of their baby girl.
Embrace Neutrality
They made a conscious decision to embrace neutrality when it came to their daughter’s clothing choices.
Her MIL Got Her Pink Dresses

The couple received several dresses in both blue and pink, especially from her MIL, who got them a lot of pink dresses.
MIL only purchased girly, pink, glittering clothing. But Mary didn’t like it and dressed her in a feminine style.
Things Took a Turn
However, the situation took a turn when Mary decided to dress her daughter in a shade of blue.
MIL was shocked and said, “NOO, you have to dress her in girly clothes, or else she might end up as a homosexual or a trans person!”
She Got Angry
This unreasonable demand made Mary angry and as a result, she chose to use clothing to annoy her MIL.
She Made a Decision
So, whenever the couple was meeting MIL, Mary dressed her daughter in blue.
MIL became angry whenever she met the couple and with each encounter, she told Mary to dress in more traditionally feminine clothing.
Scared She Might Become a Trans Person
She often repeated, “I’m so scared she will end up as a trans person!”
However, through it all, Mary stood firm and told her that it’s just a color and she doesn’t care what sexuality or identity her daughter ends up having.
Her MIL Was Homophobic
Mary shared that her MIL is judgmental and homophobic and keeps trashing the LGBTQ+ community.
Her Partners Questioned Her
But Mary’s partner questioned the necessity of these confrontations, considering them potentially unnecessary provocations.
Mary recognized that, in time, her daughter would make her own choices about her clothing but for now it was about making a stand against homophobia.
Voices of Support
Mary took to Reddit to ask whether she was wrong for what she did and more than three thousand comments poured in supporting her.
Take It Further
One Reddit user wrote, “Take it even further. You start wearing all-blue outfits too. If you ever find yourself out shopping with her, or sorting through an old closet, or similar, keep holding up any blue shirt or dress and telling her she’d look great in it. Wrap all of her birthday and Christmas gifts in blue wrapping paper.”
The Tradition
Another user added, “During earlier eras, pink was the color for boys, and blue was for girls. Until the early 20th century, boys wore dresses or gowns until they were “breached” at ages four to seven when they were dressed in pants/trousers for the first time. It’s hard to tell the gender of little kids in old photographs because of this.”
Refuse to See Her
A third user commented, “Make your life easier just refuse to see this ignorant bigot at all and ask your husband why he’s so keen to placate such disgusting nonsense.”
