In a tragic turn of events, Leonard Allen Cure, who endured more than 16 years in prison on a wrongful conviction, met a tragic end after an encounter with a Georgia sheriff’s deputy near the Georgia-Florida state line.
A Fateful Traffic Stop
As Leonard Cure was driving along Interstate 95, near the border between Georgia and Florida, he was unexpectedly pulled over by a deputy from Camden County, Georgia.
Cure, at first, cooperated with the deputy as he got out of his vehicle, not foreseeing the tragic turn of events that lay ahead.
The situation took a violent turn when the deputy informed Cure of his arrest.
Stun Gun Deployment
In response to Cure’s failure to obey commands, the deputy resorted to using a stun gun as a means to subdue him.
Despite the stun gun’s deployment, Cure allegedly resisted and assaulted the deputy.
With the situation spiraling out of control and the stun gun failing to subdue Cure, the deputy resorted to drawing his firearm.
Tragically, the encounter culminated in the deputy firing a fatal shot at Cure, leading to his untimely death.
The Mysterious Stop
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is responsible for looking into the matter, did not disclose the specific reasons behind the traffic stop that led to this tragic incident.
A History of Wrongful Conviction
Cure had been wrongfully convicted of armed robbery in Dania Beach, Florida, and had been sentenced to life in prison due to previous convictions for robbery and other offenses.
A Lifelong Struggle
For Leonard Cure, life had been a relentless struggle, with his innocence buried under layers of suspicion and incarceration.
A Turning Point
In 2020, Broward County prosecutors initiated a review that revealed significant exculpatory evidence, including solid alibis and the absence of physical evidence or credible witnesses tying Cure to the crime.
After 16 years of wrongful imprisonment, Leonard Cure’s freedom was finally realized when Broward County prosecutors moved to exonerate him.
Following his release, Cure embraced the cause of justice by collaborating with legal authorities and participating in training programs to improve the judicial process.
A Glimpse of Hope
In an attempt to rectify the injustice he suffered, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a claims bill in June that granted Cure $817,000 in compensation for his wrongful conviction, along with educational benefits.
