President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden has been indicted by special counsel David Weiss on felony gun charges. Donald Trump has responded to the news and he is not happy about it. Here’s the full story.
Firearms Charges
Hunter Biden was indicted Thursday on federal firearms charges, the latest turn of events in an extensive investigation into the president’s son.
High Stakes Trial
The case could result in a possible high-stakes trial just as the 2024 election approaches.
The charges come after a plea agreement he struck with prosecutors in recent months broke down.
Addicted to Crack
Biden is accused of lying about his drug use when he bought a firearm in October 2018.
This was during a time when he has acknowledged struggling with addiction to crack cocaine, according to the indictment filed in federal court in Delaware.
False Statements
He was charged with two counts of making false statements, first for checking a box falsely saying he was not addicted to drugs and second for giving it to the shop for their federally required records.
A third count alleges he possessed the gun for about 11 days despite knowing he was a drug user.
Smoked Crack Every 15 Minutes
By his own account in his memoir, “Beautiful Things,” Biden battled drug addiction and for periods during 2018 smoked crack “every 15 minutes.”
Could Face Up to 25 Years in Prison
All three counts are felonies, and if convicted, Hunter Biden could face a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison and fines of up to $750,000.
However, “actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum sentence,” a Justice Department statement from special counsel David Weiss said.
Plea Deal
A felony gun charge against Hunter Biden, 53, had previously been part of the plea deal that also included guilty pleas to misdemeanor charges of failing to pay taxes on about $4 million of income in 2017 and 2018.
Under the terms, he would not have pleaded guilty to the gun charge, and prosecutors would have agreed to dismiss it if he stayed out of trouble for two years.
But the agreement was dismissed during a court hearing in July when a judge raised questions about it.
Immunity?
The first son’s Defense attorney Abbe Lowell argued that part of the deal, which includes immunity provisions against other potential charges, remains in place.
MAGA Interference
He said in a statement that Hunter Biden “possessing an unloaded gun for 11 days” presented no threat to public safety and slammed “‘MAGA Republicans’ improper and partisan interference in this process,” a reference to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
Please Deal is Invalid
The prosecution team claimed the plea agreement was never in place and is now invalid.
Trump’s Reaction
Meanwhile, Former President Donald Trump said of the indictment of Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, it was “only crime” that did not implicate the president.
Very Unfair
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, also claimed that Democrats have “started a process that is very dangerous for our Country” with indictments and investigations, which he alleges are “very unfair.”
Crooked Joe
“This, the gun charge, is the only crime that Hunter Biden committed that does not implicate Crooked Joe Biden. One down, Eleven to go!’

He continued further “The Democrats, with all of their horrible, very unfair, and mostly illegal Witch Hunts, have started a process that is very dangerous for our Country. They have opened the proverbial Pandora’s Box, and it is possible that the USA will never be the same again. SO SAD!!!” Trump posted.

Special Treatment
The indictment follows the opening of an impeachment inquiry by House Republicans into the president over his family’s foreign business dealings.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy claimed that Hunter Biden received “special treatment” by his father’s administration.
The president has denied any involvement in Hunter Biden’s foreign work, and the White House has repeatedly declined to comment on the special counsel’s investigation into Hunter Biden.
