Collaborative Environment: The Hospital-Research Dynamic
Sarah worked at a hospital and research institution. Though she worked shoulder-to-shoulder with a large number of nurses, she herself worked on the research side of things.
Naturally, she was eager to foster a collaborative working environment with her nurse peers, but one nurse, Michelle, was anything but kind.
She Won Over Her Colleagues
Sarah really went the extra mile to build good relationships with her colleagues, even going so far as to offer homemade treats. But despite all her efforts, Michelle was as cold as ice.
She Was Lazy, Too
Not only did Michelle seem to harbor a deep dislike for Sarah – she complained about doing her job, too!
Any time Sarah came to her with an assignment, Michelle would complete it but only begrudgingly, and only after making a show of being as unwilling as possible.
A Bad Attitude at Work
Sarah often needed Michelle’s help drawing blood tubes, and this led to further tension. Michelle met every task with a bad attitude. Sarah tried to be as appreciative as possible, but it never helped.
Spreading Gossip
As if that weren’t enough, Sarah soon discovered that Michelle had been spreading lies about her to other nurses!
Making False Accusations
Michelle even accused Sarah of dressing provocatively in patient-facing areas. Sarah was confused by the claim. There was absolutely nothing inappropriate at all about the way she dressed!
All she could do was try to avoid conflict by steering clear of Michelle.
An Impossible Situation
Sadly for Sarah, it wasn’t possible to avoid Michelle forever. It was a small workplace, and there was just no way to completely avoid the woman.
A Meeting With the Supervisor
One day, Sarah was called into a meeting with a supervisor. The supervisor had received a report about the way Sarah dressed. Not only that, but a patient had submitted a formal complaint as well!
Her Supervisor Had No Choice
Her supervisor was just as confused about this as Sarah herself, but her supervisor had no choice but to put her on probation with increased supervision.
Working Under Probation
While on probation, Sarah was required to have constant supervision during patient visits. The restriction limited her professional freedom, hurt her reputation, and brought her a lot of embarrassment.
Caught Red-Handed
Another day came that Sarah needed to draw blood tubes, so she, her supervisor, and a nurse manager all went down to the triage room to get started on the task.
Wouldn’t you know it, Michelle was caught red-handed wasting time on the internet!
A Shocking Discovery
Michelle hurriedly closed her web browsing tabs, but it was too late for her. The nurse manager and supervisor had already gotten an eye-full of some rather inappropriate content!
Exposing Michelle’s Behavior: Formal Write-up
Michelle’s history of wasting work hours prompted a formal write-up from the nurse manager. Consequences for her actions finally began to unfold, giving Sarah some much needed validation.
Michelle’s Devious Plot
Further investigation revealed that Michelle had fabricated the patient complaint against Sarah!
Apologies and Redemption
Needless to say, Sarah’s supervisor profusely apologized for the unwarranted probation, and restored Sarah’s probation-free status immediately.
A Bad Day for Michelle
But things took a turn for the worse for Michelle. She could see the writing on the wall: if she didn’t quit, they’d fire her. She submitted her two weeks’ notice almost immediately.
Sarah’s Final Act
On Michelle’s last day, Sarah ventured into the break room to retrieve some documents. Finding Michelle alone, she couldn’t resist a parting shot.
Sarah sarcastically wished Michelle good luck in her next job, and flashed her before walking back out.
