A stressed-out dad recently asked for opinions on Reddit after he sold his sister’s wedding dress when she left his son off the invitation list, even though it was his son who made the dress. Here is the full story.
A Good News!
OP is a 40-year-old man whose 30-something sister was getting married in a week.
A Big Family Affair
Her fiancé had proposed a year earlier, and the whole family was wrapped up in planning the whole time.
He Was Excited to Make the Dress
At her engagement dinner, the sister asked OP’s 17-year-old son to make her wedding dress.
The boy had always loved fashion and design, and he jumped at the chance. And he was going to do it for free!
She Was Tough to Satisfy
But it was no easy task to satisfy his aunt’s wishes. OP’s son created design after design for a solid month, and she rejected about 50 of them.
Finally, they agreed on a design, and the nephew got to work on actually creating the dress.
It Took Forever
OP paid for the expensive fabric and other materials, because he wanted to be involved in the process.
Just like the design phase, sewing the dress was a long process, because the bride-to-be kept asking for changes.
They All Got Emotional
Finally, after five long months of work, his boy finished the masterpiece and unveiled it to the family.
His grandmother cried when she saw her daughter in the dress, and even OP got choked up at the sight of his sister wearing his son’s work.
Not on the List
But then, a few weeks before the wedding, invitations went out to the guests…OP’s son did not receive one and went to his dad, devastated.
Nothing to Worry About
At first, OP told the boy that he didn’t need a separate invite since the family was invited.
There was no reason to worry, he said, but he’d talk to his sister anyway.
No Kids Allowed
When OP messaged his sister, her reply completely floored him.
She said that because they were serving alcohol at the wedding, they weren’t going to allow any minors to attend.
She Wouldn’t Budge
OP’s son was the only underage child in the entire family, so it was silly to not include him on that basis.
He asked his sister to make an exception for the boy, but she cut him off and made it clear she wouldn’t change her mind.
She Had to Go Dress Shopping
It was a slap in the face to OP’s son after all the work he had done, and OP made a decision on the spot.
He told his sister that she had better find another dress to wear right away because she wasn’t going to use the one his son had made.
They Ganged Up on Him
Of course, this infuriated his sister, and she called him up to chew him out.
Then she sicced their mother on him. The older woman told her son that he had to let his sister have the dress. He refused.
Dress for Sale
Meanwhile, OP had to console his son, who had poured his heart and soul into making a dress for his aunt, only to be jilted.
After getting some initial feedback from Reddit readers, OP convinced his son that he could sell the dress on the open market.
She Could Still Have It, for a Price
They did some research on the going rate for dresses, factoring in the cost of materials and the boy’s hours worked.
They were surprised to learn that the dress was pretty valuable, and offered to sell it to the bride at a fair price.
Her Big Day Was Ruined
She cried and rejected the offer, saying the dress was a gift and that she was entitled to have it, because she was family.
She begged them not to ruin her big day, but she never did invite her nephew to attend the wedding.
Did His Reaction Fit?
So now, the son is still devastated, and the family is broken. OP wonders if he made a mistake by not giving his sister the dress, and he worries that the relationship will never be the same.
Most Redditors think OP did the right thing in sticking up for his son. They say that not inviting the boy to the wedding was a major insult after all the work he did for his aunt.
Is She Secretly Homophobic?
Some of them wonder if the aunt or her future husband is homophobic and that’s the real reason for keeping the kid away. Maybe alcohol had nothing to do with it.
OP never said whether or not his son was gay, but some of the commenters think the wedding guests might assume that when they found out he made the dress.
