In families, the clash between personal beliefs and parental expectations is not uncommon. For one Reddit user, this conflict recently took center stage when a simple request from their mother turned into a challenging decision.
A Religious Holiday
Ben’s story unfolded on a day that marked both a friend’s birthday celebration and a religious holiday in their country.
They Had Assignments to Do
As a 19-year-old student in the final days of their third university cycle, Ben had his plate full with assignments to complete.
The Plan
Ben planned to finish his tasks in the morning so he could attend his friend’s birthday in the evening.
His Was Afraid
He told his mom about his plans the night before because he was afraid she would impose some conditions before he could go.
Things Took a Turn
However, on the day, while Ben was working on his assignments his mom entered his room and told him that they would be going to mass in a few hours.
They Were Not Religious
Ben does not consider himself a religious person, despite his parents’ strong religious inclinations, especially his mother’s.
He Reminded Her of the Plan
But, Ben said that he couldn’t attend mass due to his assignments and mentioned his friend’s birthday celebration planned for later in the day.
She Gave Him a Choice
However, Ben’s mother became furious and warned him if he didn’t attend mass, he wouldn’t be allowed to go to his friend’s birthday.
Ben attempted to talk about it, but his mom didn’t listen.
The Time Arrived
The hours ticked away, and the moment to leave for mass arrived, yet Ben remained resolute in his decision not to go.
They Tried to Explain
Ben tried to explain, but his mother kept saying, “This is how we agreed,” but Ben said, “No, that’s what you said.”
Things Turned Ugly
At that moment, Ben’s dad entered and started raising his voice because Ben didn’t want to go.
He said Ben always does what he wants and that “it’s been a while since he went to mass.”
He Was Grounded
But Ben stayed firm with their decision.
Finally, he was grounded and wasn’t able to go to his friend’s party.
Family Dynamics
Ben took to Reddit to ask whether he was in the wrong for not going and several Redditors sided with him saying that he was not wrong.
One Reddit user wrote, “It sounds like there are some culturally specific family dynamics here that I’m not personally familiar with, but you’re an adult and should be able to make your own decisions about how you spend your time.”
Religion Is Awful
Another user added, “No not at all. You have my permission to tell them that their religion is awful and they should quit having bricks for brains.”
