OP and his wife planned out the life they wanted for themselves and their kids before they ever got pregnant.
She Would Stay Home
OP’s wife had always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, so the couple set up their living arrangements and got a handle on their spending to make that happen.
But She Hated It
So, when their first child arrived, OP’s wife stayed at home as planned. But she really struggled with the setup, and it definitely wasn’t what she had expected.
They Traded Places
But they both still wanted their kids to have a parent at home with them all the time, so they changed their plans. Since OP and his wife made about the same amount of money, they swapped.
He Was Mr. Mom
OP’s wife went back to work, and he stayed at home with their child.
He’s Living the Dream
They’ve had two more children since then, and OP is still a stay-at-home dad. It’s the best job he ever had, and he loves it.
He Got a Promotion
OP admits he was sort of surprised at how easy his new gig was for him. He had a background in manual labor, then moved into an office setting as they started planning for kids.

During dinner, the conversation turned to childcare and the experiences the women around the table had when they were on maternity leave. OP’s wife chimed in, recalling how much she hated being stuck at home.

She also told the group about her arrangement with OP and how well it was working out.

One of the other women asked OP if he was chomping at the bits to get back to the “easy life” of a real job.
