A Reddit user shared his story of being a single dad and being interrogated by a woman at the mall over his daughter.
The original poster (OP) explained that his ex’s parents gave his daughter money for her birthday, so he took her to the outlet mall so she could pick out some stuff.
OP says he’s used to gawking and suspicion when he’s out with his kids. When they got to the mall, OP’s daughter said she had to use the bathroom.
The family bathroom was occupied, so OP sent her into the ladies’ room. OP waited outside the doorway off to the side so he couldn’t see in when the door opened but so that he would be right there when she came out.
While OP was waiting, a woman came up and gave him an odd stare, and asked him why he was waiting outside the ladies’ room.
OP said he was waiting for his daughter to come out, and she proceeded to offer to go inside to watch her.

OP said no because he has had bad experiences with people who claimed to mean well, only to try getting his children to admit they had been kidnapped and then try to sneak them out to “safety.”
Even though he understands their intentions are good, OP said it gets exhausting to deal with. The woman asked why she couldn’t go in to watch her, then proceeded to interrogate OP, asking where her mother was, what his daughter’s name was, and what she looked like. OP got fed up and loudly said, “Lady stop trying to creep on my kid in the restrooms!”
The woman finally left him alone and walked away. His daughter exited the bathroom, and they got what they came for and went to get his two other kids.
OP vented about the experience to his parents. His father thought it was funny, but his mother thought he should not have humiliated the woman like that.
The Reddit community was quick to rally around OP on this one.
One user said, “Fathers are parents too! And taking little girls in to a men’s room with urinals is not a good choice! She asked why you were ‘hanging outside a ladies toilet’. You answered. Once. That was enough!”
Another user said, “NTA. The second she starts demanding where your wife is, you know this person is not a safe person. You did the exact right thing to get her to go away.”
Another user called out the inequality of the situation. “Yep. Reverse all the genders here and cops would be called if a pervy stranger was trying to go in the restroom and take control of a 6yo boy. You’re the parent. You have it under control. Asking once if you’d like them to check on your daughter is being nice. After that, tell them to f right off.”
Was OP right to react the way he did? Should the woman have minded her own business? How would you have reacted in this situation?
