A recent incident on a guy’s night out sparked a huge conversation on Reddit. Angus found himself in a tough situation that made him question his friend’s actions and led to a divide in the group. As the night unfolded, tensions rose, and one woman’s advances blurred the line between harmless fun and unwelcome behavior.
A Night Out With Friends
It was a night out at a bar with friends, including two girls named Steph and Taylor.
While Steph is single, Taylor is in a relationship with a guy. Angus isn’t sure about their specific sexual orientations, but he knows that both are interested in men.
The evening was full of drinks, laughter, and good times. However, there was an incident that Angus couldn’t ignore. Steph and another friend were indulging in more drinks and shots than the rest of the group.
Angus noticed something unusual as the night progressed – Taylor’s persistent attempts to get Steph to kiss her.
Overheard at the Bar
The bar was quite noisy, making it hard to catch every word, but Angus overheard Taylor saying things like “Jesus, it’s just a friend kiss” and “My boyfriend doesn’t care; Jess and I (referring to another friend) kiss all the time.”
Each time Taylor made such a suggestion or puckered up next to Steph, she responded by claiming she couldn’t hear, focusing very intently on her drink, or directly saying “No.”
As the night wore on and Taylor’s behavior continued, Steph began to look visibly annoyed.
Angus started to feel uncomfortable and observed that none of their friends were addressing the situation.
He believed that if it were a man making these persistent advances, especially towards a clearly drunken Steph, others would have intervened.
Angus Steps In
Angus decided to step in and asked Taylor to stop, adding that she should accept Steph’s repeated “No” as her final answer.
Taylor reacted defensively, questioning why Angus had an issue with two women kissing and implying that he was insinuating something.
Angus further aggravated the situation by saying, “No means no,” which led to an intense argument.
A Tense Argument
Taylor went off at Angus – she was disgusted that he used that phrase against two women and for insinuating that she was behaving like a creepy guy who wouldn’t take no for an answer.
But Angus thought this was exactly how she was acting – “I get that women have to put up with a lot, but I didn’t see how that meant she could repeatedly ask Steph over and over again to kiss her for literally the whole night out.”
The atmosphere grew uncomfortable, and the group fell into an awkward silence.
An Awkward End to the Evening
Steph, looking distressed, left soon after, mumbling a quiet thank-you to Angus as she departed to be picked up by a family member.
The rest of the group began dispersing, and Angus decided not to stay any longer.
A Problematic Evening
Now, Angus finds himself in a complex situation. Taylor has distanced herself from him and has told people that she’s done with him as a friend unless he apologizes.
Their mutual friends have advised him to apologize to smooth things over.
Should He Apologise?
Although Angus stands by his perspective, he’s contemplating whether an apology might be the right course of action to fix the group.
As for Steph’s feelings on the matter, Angus hasn’t reached out to her, mainly because he doesn’t want to cause further discomfort or stir up more issues. As he had no one else to ask, he went to Reddit to get their advice.
Consent Is Universal
Hundreds of Redditors responded with the resounding message that “No means no,” regardless of gender or sexual orientation. One user empathetically noted, “A sex pest is a sex pest. Good on you.”
Another chimed in, saying, “She doesn’t get a free pass ’cause she’s a girl. She’s only gotten angry ’cause she’s been called.”
Stand Against Harassment
One Redditor stated, “If she wants to not be compared to creepy men who keep harassing a woman for attention after being told no, perhaps she should stop acting the same as creepy men who keep harassing women for attention after being told no.”
Reassessing His Friendships
A lot of Redditors argued that Angus might need to drop his friendship group. One user said, “Taylor was sexually harassing someone and somehow expects an apology? Sounds like you need better friends.” another added to the sentiment, saying,
“As for the rest of your friends group, you need to reassess if you want to be friends with people who allow sexual harassment just because it’s woman to woman.”
Universal Boundaries and Unacceptable Behavior
The consensus was clear: consent and boundaries are universal, and no one should feel entitled to pressure someone into an uncomfortable situation.
Redditors overwhelmingly praised Angus’s decision to intervene and urged him to “never apologize to a sexual harasser, especially for calling out their nasty behavior.”
