An estranged daughter sparked outrage on Reddit when she walked out of her dad’s funeral. It was more about the living mom than the dead man in the casket, though. Here is the full story.
They’re Happy Together
OP is a white woman in her early 30s who is married to a man of mixed race. They have a 2-year-old child together.
Mom Is a Big Problem
For the last 5 years, OP has had no contact with her family at all. That’s mostly due to her mother, who is controlling and narcissistic.
She’s a Racist
OP’s mom is racist, too, and never approved of her future son-in-law.
She Destroyed the Family
And most of the extended family stopped talking to OP’s family shortly before she was born. She blames her mom for that, too.
She’s Happy Without Mom
So, it’s just been OP, her husband, and their child making their way in the world, and OP is down with that.
They Were Friendly With Each Other
The one exception to all that was one of OP’s aunts on her father’s side. The two women made a point to catch up every now and then, even during the tough years.
Her Father Was Gone
Recently, OP’s aunt contacted her to let her know that her father had been in an accident. It was very traumatic and killed him in an instant.
It Didn’t Change Anything
OP was upset to hear that news, but to her, it didn’t change anything about the family dynamic.
Her Auntie Needed Her
But OP’s aunt asked her to come to the funeral. The older woman said she really needed OP there for support and would appreciate it if she came.
It Was a Sacrifice
So, reluctantly, OP agreed to attend her dad’s funeral.
They Pounced on Her
In the days leading up to the funeral, OP didn’t hear from her other family members. But when she showed up at the mortuary, they swarmed around her.
They Wanted to Catch Up
It was like the last 5 years never happened, and everyone wanted to catch up with OP.
She Stayed Cool
OP didn’t want any part of it and thought they were all super phony. But she kept cool for her aunt’s sake and tried to be polite.

But then her family members put OP on the spot during the ceremony and told her she needed to speak on her dad’s behalf.
She Had Nothing to Say
OP declined, but the rest of the family kept pushing and pushing. So, to try and avoid making a scene, OP finally stood up and said, “He will be missed.”

Having uttered her tiny tribute to her dad, OP sat back down.
She Struck a Nerve
But she struck a nerve with her mom, who called OP offensive names and started shouting at her.
He Deserved More
The mom went on to tell OP what a terrible person she was for not preparing a full speech, especially since more than 150 people had shown up to pay their respects to her father.
She Was Done
That was more than enough for OP, who stood back up and told her mother to enjoy the rest of her day.

Then OP walked out of the funeral home without ever looking back.

Both OP’s husband and her aunt have told her they’re proud of her for keeping her cool even though her mom was screaming at her.

But many other family members have been bombarding OP with insulting text messages and phone calls saying she went too far. Redditors were mostly astounded by the nerve of OP’s mother and agree with the husband and aunt that OP did a great job keeping her cool.
Many of them say they don’t think they could have kept it together in the same situation, and some wonder if anything would have been “too far” in terms of a reaction to the mom.
