When he realizes that his fiancé has put aside a large trust fund for her daughter and nothing for her step-children, Max’s fears about financial inequality threaten to tear their family apart. Here’s what happened to this formerly happy couple.
Tension Brewing at Home
A normally happy household has erupted into resentment after Sasha, 28, and her fiance Max, 35, argued bitterly over her daughter’s trust fund.
When an upset Max discovered that Sasha put aside a significant inheritance for her daughter, and excluded her step-children, it exposed potential inequalities in their family life.
Insecurities Surface
This issue brought to the surface various insecurities and issues for the engaged couple, and a desperate Sasha took to Reddit to get some more perspective on their problems.
A Big Birthday Present
The problem came to a head when Sasha purchased a pony for her daughter’s 9th birthday.
Since her child had been taking horse-riding lessons for years it seemed like a fitting gift. But Max wasn’t impressed.
Wasteful Ways
Her frustrated fiancé accused her of wasting money from their joint account but was stunned when she pointed out that it wasn’t from their account – she had taken it out of her own money.
But this did nothing to quell Max’s anger.
A Balanced Family
Max and Sasha share three children, Sasha’s 9-year-old daughter and Max’s two children (a 6 and 10-year-old), all from previous relationships.
During the course of their relationship, the couple ensured that both of their incomes were pooled into a shared account for the family’s finances, or at least that’s what he thought.
Not Fair on the Kids
Max couldn’t help but feel that it was unfair that his fiancé had a pool of money from before their relationship, and that she was spending it on her daughter while neglecting her step-children.
In his eyes, the only way to make things fair was if Sasha also purchased ponies for his children out of her own pocket.
Things Get Worse
Sasha refused his request. She felt it was unreasonable to have to split the “generational wealth” she had saved for her daughter.
This was thet start of their financial disagreements, but it was about to get much worse.
Secret Trust Fund
Before she met Max and his children Sasha had set up a separate trust fund for her daughter.
The fund held a significant sum set aside for her daughter to withdraw when she turned 30, with some exceptions made for education, living allowance, early marriage, etc.
Neither Sasha, Max nor their other two children were included in it.
Max Finds the Papers
A few weeks after the ‘pony incident’ Max stumbled upon some papers related to the trust fund. After confronting Sasha, his suspicions were confirmed, and her furious fiancé blew up.
He said it was “not fair” for her to keep 90% of her wealth separate from their marriage, and that it was “incredibly selfish not to share” with her two step-children.
The Real Reason
As terrible as this all may seem, Sasha had a legitimate reason to keep these finances separate. You see, life was not easy for her and her daughter before Max came along.
After falling pregnant by a stranger in college, the younger Sasha was disowned by her parents and left to fend for herself.
Grandpa to the Rescue
Luckily enough, Sasha’s grandfather took his granddaughter in and helped to support her through the early stages of motherhood.
And when he sadly passed away he left behind a large estate for both Sasha and his great-granddaughter.
Not Hers to Give
In Sasha’s eyes, 50% of the assets left by her grandfather were not hers to spend however she wanted.
He had been close with her daughter for the first seven years of her life before he passed away, and in Sasha’s own words, “he left [the inheritance] to me believing I would pass it on to her.”
For this reason, she had never considered splitting it with her step-children.
Relationship Imbalance
Though these reasons make sense, Max wasn’t having it. He pointed out that he was bringing all of his wealth into their relationship, while she was only bringing in a fraction of her own.
With the additional inheritance, it was guaranteed that her daughter would go on to live “a luxurious life,” while his biological children would only have “average” lives.
She’s Right
While there were some dissenting opinions, most Redditors were in support of Sasha’s decision. In fact, many questioned Max’s intentions and values because of his entitled view of their finances.
One Redditor asked, “Is he marrying you? Or your money?” and another was more blunt, saying “He’s marrying your money, not you.”
Where to Go from Her
After such a turbulent back and forth over money issues, it’s hard to say how Sasha and Max’s relationship will work out moving forward, especially with potentially upset step-children and a wedding on the way.
