OP worked at a big, family-run business, well-known for its amazing holiday offerings. Employees who had been there for over 25 years got a big eight weeks of holiday plus two weeks of me-time. The business had three work shifts and more than 250 workers.
The Experienced Long-Timer
Here’s Jimmy, a seasoned worker who joined the business at 20 and was now 63. He wasn’t as interested in work as he used to be.
He had a special job in the business: he was one of only two people who knew how to make a special part for their product.
Ownership Changes
One day, the boss of the plant said he was retiring and selling the business to a big company, saying not much would change.
But the actions of the new bosses showed this wasn’t true.
Taking Away Worker Benefits
The new bosses quickly took away several benefits for workers.
Holiday Cuts
The biggest change was cutting the maximum holiday time to four weeks and getting rid of personal time altogether.
Letting Go of Anyone Close to Retiring
Workers who had the most benefits had to use them before the year’s end, as the company wouldn’t pay for any unused time.
They also let go of anyone who was close to retiring, including Jimmy.
One Big Rule Change
Despite all these big changes, one rule that was cancelled ended up being very important: workers no longer had to get their holiday time approved. They could just call in and take it.
Jimmy’s Payback
Jimmy was furious about these changes! He saw a chance for revenge.
New Employee
When the bosses hired a new person for him to teach – maybe even to replace him – Jimmy decided to use all his Paid Time Off (PTO) at once.
He Took a Ten-Week Holiday
He called in on the first day of training and took a ten-week holiday.
Jimmy’s job was very important, and the parts he made were special and patented.
A Strange Absence
At first, his sudden absence didn’t cause a fuss, thanks to a stockpile of his parts.
But while he was on holiday, Jimmy found another job. When it was time for him to come back, he didn’t.
Jimmy’s Big News
After two days of trying and failing to reach him, Jimmy called in on the third day to quit. The big company was stuck, because they didn’t have anyone else who could make the special parts.
Hiring the Original Boss Back
They had to hire the original boss back and pay a lot of money to teach new people how to make them.
A Million-Dollar Solution
The last OP heard, the original boss was so angry with what the big company did that he charged them a million dollars for the contract.
Million Dollar Amendment
With no other options, the big company had to pay the huge bill or risk going out of business.
The Lesson of the Story
In the corporate world, it’s easy to fall prey to viewing workers as mere cogs in the machine, replaceable and insignificant.
Yet, this tale brings to light the reality that each cog holds its own unique worth.
Every Person’s Own Unique Worth
From the seasoned veterans like Jimmy, who hold a wealth of knowledge and expertise in their hands, to the newly onboarded workers still learning the ropes, every person in the organization contributes a specific value.
