A “Dickensonian” Workplace
The factory floor was almost straight out of a Charles Dickens novel. Mike constantly dealt with a toxic environment created by his manager.
The Common Practice
Threats of firing to “motivate” employees were a common practice.
She Throws Her Weight Around
The manager would consistently invite employees to her office to intimidate and humiliate them. She seemed to take pleasure in the power trip, relishing in the fear she brought to her staff.
Many of his coworkers had had multiple trips upstairs, and now, it was Mike’s turn.
Mike’s Turn to Shine
Mike knew exactly what was coming when he went to his manager’s office, but unfortunately for her, he had an ace up his sleeve.
No Incentive to Excel
The factory operated on an unjust pay structure that provided no motivation for employees to put in any extra effort. No matter how well they performed, their wages were rock-bottom.
He Put In Rock-Bottom Effort
Mike took full advantage of this. If he’s not going to get paid to do more than the bare minimum, why do more than the bare minimum? So he put in rock-bottom effort for those rock-bottom wages.
The Office Showdown
Inside the office, Mike’s manager wasted no time telling him that she would have no choice but to fire him if his performance didn’t improve. But Mike had a different plan in mind.
He Played It Cool
Mike’s response? He said he actually didn’t care if he kept his job or not!
Working for Him Was “Optional”
He had no major expenses, and his wife was the breadwinner between the two of them. As far as he was concerned, working was optional.
She Had No Leverage!
She had no leverage over him! It was clear to both of them that there was no way for her to pressure him to do more.
Mike won the battle without even trying.
He Called Her Bluff
She kept trying in vain to make Mike afraid for his job, but he held firm.
His Manager Was Flustered
It made no difference to him if he was let go or not. His manager was clearly flustered and at a loss for words.
He Stuck to His Script
She tried to press him to work faster anyway, but without any leverage, it was useless. They both knew that Mike was working well below the speed he was capable of, but she had no way of proving it.
Her Silence Speaks Volumes
It was the only time he was ever called up to her office. After that day, Mike’s manager never called him in for another meeting again.
