Texas Governor Greg Abbott has bussed migrants to Los Angeles during Tropical Storm Hilary and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has strongly criticized this decision for the potential risks faced by migrants amidst extreme weather.
The Arriving Migrants
As Tropical Storm Hilary battered Southern California, a bus carrying 37 migrants departed from Brownsville, Texas, and arrived at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. The group included 16 families with 14 children and an infant.
The LA Mayor’s Concerns
Mayor Karen Bass expressed her concerns, stating that it was unjust to expose migrants, including families and young children, to such conditions during an unprecedented tropical storm warning.
Mayor’s Criticism
Mayor Bass condemned Governor Abbott’s decision, stating that it was unacceptable to send migrants on a journey through extreme weather conditions. She says that local leaders were urging residents to stay safe and prepare for the storm, while migrants were being sent into harm’s way.
The Mayor’s Response
Bass stressed that such actions go beyond political considerations and are, in her view, morally objectionable. The mayor and her team learned about the bus when the city’s emergency operations center was activated in response to the storm.
Tropical Storm Hilary
The arrival of Tropical Storm Hilary had led to a state of emergency being declared by several local officials in Southern California due to the risks of heavy rainfall and extensive flooding.
Governor’s Office Response
At the time of reporting, Governor Abbott’s office had not responded to requests for comment on the matter. The decision to bus migrants to Los Angeles is part of a broader initiative, Operation Lone Star.
Operation Lone Star
Operation Lone Star was implemented in response to President Joe Biden’s border policies. This initiative aims to provide relief to overwhelmed border communities in Texas.
Operation Criticism
However, Operation Lone Star has received much criticism. In large part due to the governor adding big buoys and long razor wire along the Rio Grande, the border between Texas and Mexico.
Biden’s Team Takes Action
Due to the buoys and razor wire the Biden administration is taking legal action against the state, worried that the barriers in the water might cause environmental and humanitarian issues.
A Warm Welcome
The migrants brought to Los Angeles were received by the L.A. Welcomes Collective, an immigrant rights group.
The group provided essential support, including food, clothing, hygiene kits, health checkups, and immigration-specific legal orientations.
Migrant Reception
In Addition to providing essentials for the migrants, the L.A. Welcomes Collective also facilitated reunions with family members and sponsors within the region.
Implications and Funding
The decision to bus migrants to various cities, including Los Angeles, has raised questions about the implications for local communities.
The federal government has allocated significant funds to support these communities in caring for migrants.
The Federal Government Worries
Currently, the federal government hopes to prevent overcrowding in short-term federal holding facilities.
The Department of Homeland Security has also announced grants of over $77 million to support communities receiving migrants through the Shelter and Services Program.
Loud Critics and a Silent Governor
Governor Abbot has yet to comment on the controversy as critics continue to speak out against Operation Lone Star for its potentially unethical treatment of migrants.
