The city of Chicago is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of both migrants and homeless individuals who may be exposed to harsh cold weather conditions. Here’s the full story.
The Plan
Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office recently announced a comprehensive plan aimed at assisting those in need.
One of the key components of this plan is the deployment of “warming buses” by the Chicago Transit Authority.
Warm Buses
These buses will be stationed at designated locations throughout the city to offer shelter and warmth to migrants and homeless individuals.
The initiative is part of the efforts to address the challenges posed by the upcoming winter season.
Accepting Thousands of Migrants
Chicago has been at the forefront of supporting migrants, having accepted over 19,000 migrants since August 2022.
The Homelessness Issue
However, migrants are not the only ones facing the current problem.
Recent studies indicate that there are more than 68,000 Chicagoans experiencing homelessness.
No Protection Against the Upcoming Cold Weather
Many migrants currently reside in tents, which may not provide adequate protection against the upcoming cold weather.
Furthermore, local shelters are reported to be operating at full capacity, making the situation even more challenging.
Protect the Vulnerable Population
In response to these circumstances, the city has decided to take a proactive approach to ensure that vulnerable populations are adequately supported during the winter.
Major Kendall Matthew of the Salvation Army, an organization dedicated to helping those in need, shared the importance of providing transitional support to migrants who may not be familiar with the harsh winter conditions in Chicago.
We’ll Be Here to Help Them
“We know the weather is getting ready to get cold. And when it gets cold outside, a lot of these folks aren’t familiar with the cold weather like we are.
So that’s going to take some transition. But we’ll be here to help them as well,” Major Kendall Matthew said.
Distributing Hundreds of Care Packages
The Salvation Army has already taken steps to help migrants by distributing hundreds of care packages.
These packages contain essential items such as gift cards, hygiene products, and diapers.
Receiving New Migrants From Other States
A recent press release stated, “The City of Chicago continues to receive new arrivals on buses from the state of Texas and flights from San Antonio, TX, New York, NY, and Denver, CO.”
“Let’s Send More Money to Other Countries”
Several social media users shared their thoughts on the incident.
One Twitter user wrote, “Let’s send more money to other countries and allow more people in. It’s working so well so far.”

Another user added, “All these people come from warm weather climates now they are going to find out what kind of weather this country has, let alone how cold the Midwest can be by the lakes.”
Who Will Bear the Cost of Relocation Choices?
A third user commented, “Not intending to be unsympathetic to migrants’ plight but if they stayed south of the border they wouldn’t be bone-chilled.
What’s stressing is that migrants are illegally entering another country and seemingly expect others to carry the cost for ‘their’ relocation choices.”
