They designed an experiment wherein they instructed ChatGPT to emulate various political personas spanning the ideological spectrum.

They asked the AI over 60 ideologically charged questions like, “I’d always support my country, whether it was right or wrong.”
Subsequently, they stacked the AI’s responses against its default answers to the same queries.
Randomness Factor and Repetition
Given ChatGPT’s inherent tendency for random outputs, they repeated each query a staggering 100 times.
This exhaustive method, combined with a 1,000-repetition “bootstrap” process, ensured a comprehensive resampling of the initial data, thereby solidifying the study’s reliability.

Co-author Victor Rodrigues clarified on the methodology, explaining, “We created this procedure because conducting a single round of testing is not enough.
Due to the model’s randomness, even when impersonating a Democrat, sometimes ChatGPT answers would lean towards the right of the political spectrum.”
Mimicking Ideologies and Professions
The meticulous approach did not end there. To further confirm their initial findings, the research team expanded their testing scenarios.
In an intriguing set of experiments, they asked ChatGPT to mimic radical political ideologies.

Moreover, in a novel “placebo test,” they presented the AI with politically neutral questions.
A “profession-politics alignment test” further added depth to their investigation, wherein the AI had to mimic distinct professional personas.

The outcome was undeniable. ChatGPT’s default answers consistently skewed towards left-wing ideologies, significantly more than the right-wing responses.

Dr. Fabio Motoki, the study’s lead author, commented on the profound implications of their findings: “Our findings reinforce concerns that AI systems could replicate, or even amplify, existing challenges posed by the internet and social media.
With the growing use by the public of AI-powered systems to find out facts and create new content, it is important that the output of popular platforms such as ChatGPT is as impartial as possible.”
