“Things Must Change or We’re Going to Lose to Trump”: Istanbul Born Cenk Uygur Challenges U.S. Constitution’s ‘Natural Born Citizens’ Presidency Rule, Launches Democratic Bid Against Biden

In an unexpected move, Cenk Uygur, the founder and host of The Young Turks, has announced his primary campaign to challenge President Joe Biden. While considered a long shot by many, Uygur’s announcement has sent waves through the political landscape as he embarks on a challenging journey to secure the Democratic nomination.

Uygur, who hails from Istanbul, faces an immediate hurdle on his path to the White House: the U.S. Constitution’s requirement that only “natural-born citizens” can assume the presidency.

He immigrated to the United States at the age of eight, and Article II, Section I, Clause 5 of the Constitution stipulates that a “natural-born citizen” is one who is a citizen from birth and doesn’t need to undergo naturalization proceedings.

This constitutional provision seemingly poses a significant obstacle to Uygur’s presidential ambitions.

However, Uygur remains undeterred by this legal challenge.

During his recent announcement on The Young Turks, he confidently asserted, “I have lawyered up,” and revealed that he had enlisted the services of the same attorney who represented Bernie Sanders during his notable presidential campaigns in 2016 and 2020.

Uygur is resolute in his decision to take his case all the way to the Supreme Court, with the belief that the precedent is on his side.

Not a Biden Supporter

Uygur’s declaration of candidacy comes with a strong statement: he firmly believes that President Joe Biden will not win a second term.

“It should not have been me, it should have been somebody else, but unfortunately, it was not anyone else,” he explained.

A Presidential Proxy

With only four months remaining until the primaries begin, Uygur believes there is an urgent need for a change in course.

He boldly declared, “He has, at best, a 10% chance of winning. I’m running as a proxy. I am running to win. But I am also running as a proxy for any other candidate.”

Facing the Age Factor

A significant portion of the American population has raised concerns about President Biden’s age, 80, and his ability to serve an effective second term in office.

The Absence of Challengers

Despite the looming possibility of a rematch with former President Donald Trump, no substantial contender within the Democratic party has emerged to challenge Biden for the nomination.

Uygur’s decision to step into this void is a remarkable endeavor.

An Unconventional Entry Into the Race

In a political climate where unconventional candidates are not uncommon, the entry of Uygur into the Democratic primary race adds an intriguing dimension.

Beyond Progressives vs. Establishment

While Marianne Williamson, a self-help author, remains in the running for the Democratic nomination, Uygur suggests that the focus is not solely on “progressives versus establishment” at this point.

Instead, it’s about effecting a change within the party.

He emphasized, “We’re at four months left, and things must change. Otherwise, we’re almost definitely going to lose to Trump.”
