Iconic and celebrated, Barbie faces another country’s ban, this time in Algeria.

An official claimed that Greta Gerwig’s acclaimed film “promotes homosexuality and other Western deviances” and “does not comply with Algeria’s religious and cultural beliefs,” echoing similar bans in Kuwait and Vietnam.

Banned for ‘Damaging Morals’

Local news outlet 24H Algerie first reported the ban, revealing Algeria’s Ministry of Culture sent letters condemning the film for “damaging morals.”

The Algerian Culture Ministry monitors the content of films displayed in theaters and has the authority to prevent them from being shown.

They Were Instructed to Stop Immediately

Instructions were issued to theaters in Algiers, Oran, and Constantine to halt screenings “immediately,” and the film’s distributor, Algeria MD Ciné, was also notified.

Despite concerns over its content, the ban may have missed its mark as Barbie has already enjoyed a three-week run in Algerian theaters, premiering on July 19 and garnering sold-out screenings.

Algeria now joins Kuwait and Vietnam in banning Barbie, while Lebanon is contemplating a similar ban due to moral concerns.

Kuwait deemed the film’s content “alien to Kuwaiti society and public order,” while Lebanon’s culture minister, Mohammad Mortada, explicitly stated concerns about promoting homosexuality and sexual transformation.

Vietnam Was the First to Ban Barbie

Vietnam, the first to prohibit Barbie, did so on the grounds of geopolitical reasons, relating to a scene depicting a map of the contested “nine-dash line” in the South China Sea, a dispute involving territorial claims by China and other nations in the region.
